Job description

Position: Counselor-Full-Time

Location: Laredo, TX.

Serving Children and Adults in Need, Inc. (SCAN) is seeking a qualified and motivated Counselor to provide substance use disorder treatment services to adolescents ages 13-17 through our Treatment for Youth (TRY) Outpatient Program, funded by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Position Summary

The Counselor will provide developmentally appropriate, evidence-based substance use disorder treatment services to adolescents and their families in an outpatient setting. The position works closely with youth, parents/guardians, referral sources, schools, juvenile justice agencies, and other community partners to support successful treatment and long-term recovery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide individual, group, and family substance use disorder counseling to youth ages 13-17.
  • Conduct screening, assessment, treatment planning, and discharge/ continuing-care planning.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on each youth's identified needs, strengths, risks, and recovery goals.
  • Utilize evidence-based and developmentally appropriate counseling approaches for adolescents with substance use disorders.
  • Provide substance use education, relapse-prevention strategies, coping skills, and recovery support.
  • Engage parents and caregivers in the treatment and recovery process when clinically appropriate.
  • Monitor client progress and modify treatment interventions as needed.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation in accordance with HHSC, Texas Administrative Code, CMBHS, licensing, and agency requirements.
  • Coordinate services and referrals with schools, juvenile justice agencies, healthcare providers, behavioral health providers, and other community resources.
  • Participate in case staffing, clinical supervision, training, quality assurance activities, and program meetings.
  • Traveling to schools, juvenile department, and other settings to provide services in own vehicle is required and will be compensated for mileage.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and comply with HIPPA, 42 CFR Part 2, and applicable state and federal confidentiality requirements.
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in Texas preferred/ required as applicable to the services provided; qualified LCDC Intern candidates may be considered based on program and licensing requirements.
  • Experience providing substance use disorder, behavioral health, or counseling services to adolescents preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Valid TX Driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation required.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, substance use disorders, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and family engagement.
  • Ability to work effectively with youth and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong documentation, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to comply with HHSC-funded program requirements and agency policies.
  • Must successfully complete required background checks and other employment requirements.

Employment: Full-Time 40 hours per week
