Job description

Assistant/Associate Medical Director – Huntington Hospital,  Huntington, NY (Northwell Health)

Huntington Hospital, a distinguished non-profit, 371-bed community hospital within Northwell Health, is seeking an accomplished and Board-Certified AP/CP Pathologist for a pivotal dual role as Staff Pathologist and Assistant/Associate Medical Director, Clinical Laboratories. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic leader to contribute to both clinical excellence and departmental oversight.

The ideal candidate will possess robust experience overseeing clinical laboratories as well as strength in anatomic/surgical pathology, complemented by demonstrated leadership capabilities. Possession of, or ability to acquire New York State Certificates of Qualification in the various laboratory sections (e.g., Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Diagnostic Immunology) is required. While new graduates with exceptional leadership potential may be considered, significant post-fellowship experience is strongly preferred. Fellowship training in a surgical pathology subspecialty is highly advantageous.

In this multifaceted role, the Assistant/Associate Medical Director will provide clinical expertise and oversight to a high-volume department that manages an impressive annual volume of over 900,000 clinical laboratory tests,15,000+ surgical specimens and more than 14,000 cytology specimens (encompassing both gynecological and non-gynecological cases). Huntington Hospital is highly distinguished by its profoundly robust surgical oncology program and complex clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Department’s clinical laboratories.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee clinical and administrative functions, ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate staff, fostering professional growth and a culture of collaboration.
  • Collaborate effectively with hospital administration, medical staff, and other departments to optimize clinical laboratory testing and patient care pathways.
  • Participate in budget planning, resource allocation, and technology adoption within the department.
  • Serve as liaison for laboratory services within the hospital and the broader Northwell Health system.

Huntington Hospital is one of the 28 award-winning hospitals in the Northwell Health System – which includes more than 1,050 community-based practice locations throughout Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Westchester, and Connecticut. We care for over two million people annually in the New York metro area and beyond, thanks to philanthropic support from our communities. We’re making breakthroughs in medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and training the next generation of medical professionals at the visionary Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Our professionals are relentless about staying ahead of the latest clinical trials and research, partnering with our own Feinstein Institute and other world-renowned institutions.

Northwell Health offers a competitive salary and benefits package. In addition, an academic appointment with The Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell is commensurate with credentials and experience. Physicians will be employed as members of Northwell Physician Partners, the fifth largest medical group in the country.
