To thrive as a Configuration Manager, you need expertise in configuration management processes, change control, and a background in IT, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools like ServiceNow, Jira, or IBM Rational, along with ITIL certification, is often expected. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for the role. How does a Configuration Manager typically interact with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Configuration Manager works closely with teams such as development, quality assurance, operations, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. They facilitate clear communication regarding configuration changes, version control, and release management to ensure all stakeholders are aligned. Regular meetings and documentation are key to tracking changes, resolving issues, and maintaining the integrity of configuration items. This collaborative approach helps prevent conflicts, ensures compliance with standards, and supports smooth project delivery.

Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking a Technical Program Manager who is a highly organized, passionate individual with excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills. This position will be based in our Santa Cruz headquarters with an expectation to work from our Marina Manufacturing site a minimum of one day per week. This role will actively work with a cross functional team at Joby Aviation, including Airframe engineering, systems engineering, system safety, manufacturing, supply chain, integration and test, certification, and more. This role will operate in a fast-paced, demanding, and rewarding environment with very high expectations for individual contribution.

  • Work closely with the airframe and interiors teams to develop and maintain hardware project timelines, from design through manufacturing introduction and aircraft type certification.
  • Provide line-side program support, coordinating with cross-functional teams to drive timely resolution of build issues.
  • Find creative solutions to remove blockers and drive progress through design, build, and test phase.
  • Analyze critical path and constraints to determine the effect of changes to schedule and recommend alternate courses of action or means of recovery on slipped schedules.
  • Coordinate cost, schedule and technical issue and risk resolution.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and as needed, interfacing with legal, shipping, quality, and other Joby support organizations.
  • Evaluate project schedule progress and performance and identify developing problem areas.
  • Maintain timely and effective change management processes and procedures.
  • Facilitate implementation of new processes and improvements.
  • Facilitate communication, discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution.

  • Bachelor’s in engineering or relevant field.
  • 5+ years of experience in an engineering environment with responsibility for implementing or managing change.
  • Demonstrated experience in High-Integrity Product Development, with a focus on 'Safety of Flight' (or equivalent) mindsets and documented evidence of compliance.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated experience in the simultaneous management of multiple high-paced engineering projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the product development cycle for hardware-centric projects from early design through to completion and launch.
  • Experience in project management tools such as MS Project, Smartsheet, Confluence, and JIRA.
  • Proficient in common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, etc.)

  • Experience in the design and certification of composite airframe structures.
  • Experience working with AC interiors.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations Part 23, Part 25 or Part 27, guidance material and industry standards.
