HON Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating ideas into workable designs. These abilities ensure innovative, efficient, and manufacturable solutions that meet both technical and client requirements.

How does a Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Design Engineers regularly work alongside teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and product management to ensure that designs are both innovative and feasible for production. Collaboration often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, reviewing prototypes, and incorporating feedback from various stakeholders. This teamwork is essential to address technical and practical challenges early in the design process, which ultimately helps in delivering a successful product to market. Strong communication and adaptability are key skills for thriving in this collaborative environment.

What does a Design Engineer do?

A Design Engineer is responsible for creating and developing new products, systems, or structures by combining engineering principles with creative design. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings and specifications, working closely with other engineers and teams to ensure functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Design Engineers are involved in every stage of product development, from initial concept through prototyping, testing, and final production. Their work often requires problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly.

What is the difference between Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDesign EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Design certifications often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD software, project planningManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork, CAD and testing
Employer & Industry UsageProduct design firms, automotive, aerospace, consumer goodsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

Design Engineers focus on creating and developing product designs using CAD tools, while Mechanical Engineers often work on the broader application, testing, and manufacturing of mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Design Engineers typically emphasize design skills and software proficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers may engage more in analysis and system integration.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Simplexity Product Development

Seattle, WA • On-site

$140K - $160K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Simplifying the Complex. Simplexity is a product development engineering firm, hired by leading technology companies to design their next generation products. In an industry of overly-complex design and production, we strive for simplicity, reducing product cost and improving reliability for our clients through our Product Development Process.
Why join Simplexity Product Development?
If you’re an engineer who likes variety in your job, you’ll fit right in here. Simplexity works across a breadth of projects — from robotics and IoT to medical devices, consumer wearables, automation and more. You won’t be siloed into one tiny piece of the organization; you’ll roll up your sleeves and help solve real, difficult problems for demanding clients who expect excellence.
Our teams are tight, collaborative, and made up of folks who genuinely want to build something cool and delight our customers.  Yet that doesn’t mean grinding for 60-hours per week, week-over-week.  We believe that quality, creative work can usually be done in 40-45 hours per week and that each employee should own their work-life balance.
What we offer is meaningful engineering, technical growth, and the chance to be on the “front line” of product development.  If you thrive on variety and want to work with talented engineers on cutting-edge products, then this could be the place for you.
POSTION DESCRIPTION
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you would be working with and leading teams designing subsystems of various products, tools, and equipment. We are seeking candidates to develop complex products that include robotics, mechanisms, biotech instrumentation as well as other components. Specific technical responsibilities vary by project; however, it is imperative that you have command of all mechanical engineering fundamentals and understand how they are applied to simple, reliable design.
This position is ideal for someone who has a strong technical background, technical leadership experience, and has worked in product development consulting. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, yet enjoy a casual and flexible work atmosphere, then Simplexity may be the place for you.

  • Architect, design, and integrate intricate mechanical systems.
  • Efficiently represent concepts for your designs using block diagrams, rough CAD/schematics, sketches, etc.
  • Solve problems and design solutions that incorporate custom (injection-molded, machined, 3D-printed, and sheet metal), semi-custom, and off-the-shelf parts
  • Perform paper-studies using various mechanical engineering academic principles, such as force and energy balances, structural calculations, mechanical vibration, tolerance analysis, mechanical power transmission, etc.
  • Manage large 3D CAD assemblies of many components.
  • Generate and maintain an organized bill of materials.
  • Create 2D drawings using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Quickly and effectively prototype design concepts, testing specifications and iterating
  • Lead and mentor more junior engineers
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers of various disciplines.
  • Identify appropriate manufacturing methods for prototyping and production.  Design components appropriately for those manufacturing methods.
  • Manage, organize, and prioritize technical issues on your designs and drive toward resolution.
  • Work closely and communicate regularly with clients and project management to keep stakeholders apprised of project status, issues, design decisions, and risks.
  • Coordinate with external partners in areas like industrial design and contract manufacturing.
  • Support working on-site in the Seattle Metro area.
  • As-needed - conduct or inform simulations such as structural FEA, thermal FEA, CFD, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year university.
  • 8+ years of relevant professional engineering experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of SolidWorks (highly preferred) or equivalent CAD package.
  • Thorough understanding of 2D drawings, with a preference for strength in GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and how it is applied to design and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of manufacturing processes and mechanical design considerations – injection molding, sheet metal, machining, rapid prototyping, etc.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of assembly and alignment methods - screw joints, snap fits, dowel pins, heat-staking, etc.
  • Ability to identify and root-cause system-level defects.
  • Experience in design and integration of complex systems working closely with cross-functional disciplines (electrical, firmware, software, and systems engineers).
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills combined with attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and plan effectively.
  • Highly motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and write detailed reports.
  • Have a positive attitude and focus on client success.
  • Ethical and honest in every part of the job.

PLUSES TO HAVE
  • In-depth fluids analysis and fluidic handling experience, including microfluidic system design
  • Experience specifically related to product development consulting for clients
  • Experience using a CAD PDM system to manage CAD files
  • Robotics, instrumentation, and test equipment design experience.
  • Experience with mechatronics and electro-mechanical systems including stepper and DC motors, solenoids, gear and belt drive systems, linear actuators, bearings, sensors, and electronics.
  • Programming experience
  • Pneumatic and/or hydraulic system design experience
  • Prior experience with medical devices and working within a medical quality system
  • Finite Element Analysis, Computation Flow Dynamics, or experience in other simulation packages

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Base salary range: $140K - $160K, depending on years of experience and skill sets
  • Excellent Healthcare plan (Medical, Dental, and Vision) fully paid for by the company for the employee; partial payment for dependents
