DocuSign Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Front End Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks such as React or Angular, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, responsive design tools, and testing frameworks is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with designers and back-end engineers. These abilities ensure you can build user-friendly, visually appealing, and high-performing web applications that meet both technical and business requirements.

How does a Front End Software Engineer typically collaborate with designers and back-end developers during a project?

Front End Software Engineers work closely with designers to translate UI/UX mockups into interactive, responsive web interfaces, ensuring the final product aligns with the intended user experience. They also collaborate with back-end developers to integrate APIs and data services, often participating in joint planning sessions and code reviews to align on functionality and performance requirements. Regular communication, using tools like Jira or Slack, and participation in agile ceremonies like stand-ups and sprint planning, are standard practices to keep workflows smooth and ensure alignment across teams.

What does a Front End Software Engineer do?

A Front End Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly. Additionally, they work closely with designers and back end developers to ensure seamless integration and optimal user experiences. Their role often involves optimizing web performance, ensuring cross-browser compatibility, and implementing responsive design for various devices.

What is the difference between Front End Software Engineer vs Web Developer?

AspectFront End Software EngineerWeb Developer
Primary FocusBuilding and optimizing user interfaces and client-side applicationsDeveloping websites and web applications, including both front-end and back-end tasks
Skills & CertificationsHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks (React, Angular), UI/UX designHTML, CSS, JavaScript, sometimes back-end languages (PHP, Python), CMS platforms
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, agencies focusing on user experienceWeb development agencies, freelance, corporate websites

While both roles involve web development, a Front End Software Engineer specializes in creating and optimizing the visual and interactive aspects of applications, often working with advanced frameworks. Web Developers may handle broader tasks, including back-end development, and may work on entire websites. The choice depends on whether you prefer a specialized front-end focus or a more general web development role.

Job description

Company Overview

Docusign brings agreements to life. Over 1.5 million customers and more than a billion people in over 180 countries use Docusign solutions to accelerate the process of doing business and simplify people's lives. With intelligent agreement management, Docusign unleashes business-critical data that is trapped inside of documents. Until now, these were disconnected from business systems of record, costing businesses time, money, and opportunity. Using Docusign's Intelligent Agreement Management platform, companies can create, commit, and manage agreements with solutions created by the #1 company in e-signature and contract lifecycle management (CLM).

What you'll doDocusign is looking for Senior Software Engineers to join our development team in San Francisco. This position will be part of a team working on Docusign's Unified Experiences. The team is focused on delivering reusable end-customer experiences to internal DocuSign teams and external developer experiences, including related App Model configurations. A key area of focus for this team is building and integrating secure, scalable Identity Verification (IDV) experiences and APIs that power how customers verify identities as part of their agreement workflows.

This position requires strong critical thinking skills, the ability to quickly understand existing systems, and experience working in agile environments. The individual will primarily be building for developers, so an understanding of the developer ecosystem and empathy for developers are important. You will collaborate closely with product, security, and platform teams to design IDV flows, integrate with IDV providers, and ensure that identity data is handled securely and compliantly. If you have these qualities and a passion for building high-quality experiences that make it easier for customers to manage their agreement and identity verification processes, we'd love to talk to you.

This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Manager, Software Engineering.

Responsibility

  • Think about how to solve problems at scale

  • Develop high-quality, ship-ready code covered by a full test suite

  • Design and develop component-based, scalable user interfaces and core functionality that enable customer administrators to build simple business processes without coding expertise

  • Design and implement secure, resilient backend services and APIs that power identity verification (IDV) flows, including orchestration of document verification, risk checks, and decisioning

  • Integrate with third-party IDV/document verification providers and internal identity services, handling webhooks, asynchronous workflows, error handling, and monitoring

  • Work with Product Management and other developers to understand and translate product requirements into design requirements and provide development estimates, with a focus on high-assurance IDV use cases and user journeys

  • Collaborate as part of a cross-site development team to drive design, implementation, testing, and release of products

  • Partner with security, privacy, and compliance teams to ensure IDV experiences meet data protection, encryption, access control, and auditability standards for handling sensitive identity data

Job Designation

Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required. (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation)

Positions at Docusign are assigned a job designation of either In Office, Hybrid or Remote and are specific to the role/job. Preferred job designations are not guaranteed when changing positions within Docusign. Docusign reserves the right to change a position's job designation depending on business needs and as permitted by local law.

What you bring

Basic

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, Informatics, or equivalent

  • 8+ years of development experience or equivalent

  • Experience working with JavaScript/TypeScript, React/Redux, or other modern programming languages

Preferred

  • Experience with the full software development lifecycle, including version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, testing, and regional cloud deployments

  • Experience debugging high-priority production issues

  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-moving environment, prioritize work, and manage time effectively

  • A passion for learning new software technologies

  • Experience designing and building secure, high-availability backend services and APIs for critical workflows, ideally involving identity, authentication, or fraud/risk systems

  • Experience with identity verification (IDV), KYC, or document verification flows, including integrating with third-party IDV providers and building rules/decisioning workflows

  • Experience handling sensitive PII and identity data in compliance with security and privacy best practices (encryption in transit/at rest, access controls, data retention, audit logging)

  • Experience building or integrating user-facing flows for verification, such as document upload, selfie capture, or guided step-up verification in web or mobile applications
