Job description

Clay County is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Juvenile Detention Superintendent, overseeing operations of the Juvenile Detention Center and County Group Homes. This position supervises detention and group home staff, ensures compliance with applicable laws and policies, and promotes a safe, professional, and trauma-informed environment for youth and employees.

The Superintendent reports to the Juvenile Officer / Director of Court Services and serves as a member of the agency's management team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, schedule, train, and evaluate detention and group home staff.
  • Recruit and interview prospective employees.
  • Respond to on-call duties, crisis situations, and staff concerns.
  • Address employee performance issues and mediate workplace conflicts.
  • Investigate grievances involving juveniles and/or staff.
  • Ensure compliance with PREA standards, juvenile detention laws, and County policies.
  • Maintain required records, statistics, operational manuals, and reporting.
  • Participate in juvenile justice meetings, community outreach, and interagency partnerships.
  • Ensure facilities are appropriately staffed, supplied, and operating safely and effectively.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of juvenile justice, trauma-informed practices, de-escalation, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work 40+ hours per week and respond to on-call responsibilities.
  • Valid driver's license and liability insurance.
  • Must be physically capable of managing confrontations and applying restraints when required.
