Project Overview:
The Infrastructure GBU's Renewables & Clean Power business line is executing the Maple Creek Combined Cycle Power Project, a new natural gas-fired generation facility designed to provide reliable, efficient, and flexible power generation to support growing energy demand. The project will be executed utilizing Bechtel's proven Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) execution model, integrated digital delivery tools, and Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) processes to achieve safe, predictable, and efficient project delivery.
The Lead Piping Field Engineer will initially be based in Reston, Virginia, supporting project planning, piping constructability reviews, modularization strategy development, work package planning, procurement coordination, and execution readiness activities. During this phase, travel to the Maple Creek project site and other Bechtel offices may be required. Upon completion of project setup activities, the successful candidate will mobilize to the project site to support piping construction execution and field engineering activities.
Working closely with Engineering, Construction, Project Controls, Supply Chain, and subcontractors, the Lead Piping Field Engineer will provide technical leadership for aboveground and underground piping systems, piping commodities, testing programs, and turnover activities. This role is responsible for ensuring engineering deliverables, materials, and construction activities are aligned to support safe, efficient, and predictable project execution while maintaining compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and construction schedules.
Job Summary:
The Construction Lead Piping Field Engineer is responsible for activities of the piping field engineering team relating to construction engineering within the piping discipline. Duties include interpreting piping design drawings and specifications, piping installation/fabrication including pipe hangers and inline piping components, field verification of materials, and technical direction to field piping personnel as required. #LI-RM1
Major Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to the piping discipline such as underground and above ground piping installation and pipe supports.
  • Coordinate with engineering and procurement for the planning of modularization efforts and sequencing of design and procurement to meet project Advance Work Packaging programs.
  • Establish a piping design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer, including agreement on piping engineering deliverables and overall construction application configuration management.
  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, tracking, reporting and forecasting for piping discipline.
  • Specify the piping criteria for the construction of temporary construction facilities as required.
  • Direct the preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services and equipment such as pipes, valves and hangers.
  • Approve field requisitions as delegated by the Project Field Engineer.
  • Review material receiving reports and warehousing to assure delivery of correct piping materials.
  • Coordinate and monitor the interfaces for piping data exchange to support the construction automation plan and the project controls program requirements at the jobsite.
  • Develop and manage the piping construction quality program.
  • Direct preparation of cost estimates for piping construction activities and coordinate the preparation of cost reports, forecast and progress reports.
  • Coordinate with Field Supervision and Subcontractors to plan/support construction schedules.
  • Plan and recommend piping procedures to be implemented by Field Supervision to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Coordinate activities to ensure piping materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications.
  • Implement controls over variables affecting piping job progress such as such as piping installation and receipt to ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and ensure that other corporate programs are fully utilized.
  • Administer major subcontract changes regarding the piping discipline and represent the company in major contractual discussions and negotiations.
  • Aid the development of hydro packages and verify and witness hydro acceptance.
  • Validate and submit (discipline) construction quantities for Quantity Unit Rate Report (QURR) tracking.
  • Interface with Project Controls for submittal of quantities to ePCWorks.

Others Responsabilities
Planning:
Monitor and review subcontractor schedules, staffing plans, resource charts, material status, equipment needs, and construction methods.
Coordinate piping work sequencing with field supervision, subcontractors, Project Controls, engineering, procurement, and external interfaces.
Support Level 4/Level 5 planning, AWP package development, workface readiness, and 3-week look-ahead planning.
Review cost and schedule progress documents, prepare reports and forecasts, and keep supervision informed of assigned work status.
Participate in field change documents, RFIs, subcontract bid package support, change notice verification, and contract amendment reviews.
Coordinate contractor material deliveries, storage, and availability to support planned construction activities.
Support safe work planning, continuous improvement, and development of junior field engineering personnel.
Set team priorities, coordinate work with other discipline leads, and provide input on team performance as required.
Safety/Quality:
Monitor piping installation, materials, and equipment to verify compliance with drawings, specifications, vendor requirements, and project quality standards.
Implement and enforce project policies, procedures, work rules, and construction quality requirements within assigned areas.
Promote Bechtel's Zero Accident Philosophy and verify work methods, tools, equipment, and field activities are planned and executed safely.
Support inspections, testing, hydro/pneumatic test acceptance, punch resolution, and turnover readiness for piping systems.
Technical:
Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, vendor documents, isometrics, P&IDs, support drawings, test requirements, and construction work packages.
Provide technical direction to field engineers, supervision, subcontractors, foremen, and craft professionals.
Coordinate engineering solutions with design, construction, subcontractors, and project engineering for piping constructability and field issues.
Develop and support piping means and methods, testing processes, required test equipment, flushing, cleaning, and turnover activities.
Inspect installed components for technical acceptance and support resolution of nonconforming or incomplete work.
Use applicable construction automation, quantity tracking, work packaging, and reporting tools to support execution.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong knowledge and experience with aboveground and underground piping systems, pipe supports, piping commodities, modularization, quantity tracking and reporting, field material management, hydrostatic and pneumatic testing programs, flushing and cleaning activities, chemical cleaning operations, steam blow execution, and system turnover processes. Experience supporting field engineering and construction activities on large industrial EPC projects is preferred.
  • Experience on Combined Cycle Power Generation projects is preferred. Candidates with experience supporting power, energy, petrochemical, oil & gas, mining, or other large industrial construction projects will also be considered. Knowledge of piping modularization strategies, workface planning principles, Advanced Work Packaging (AWP), and construction work package development is preferred.
  • Experience interpreting engineering design drawings, specifications, vendor documentation, piping isometrics, support drawings, P&IDs, testing requirements, and construction work packages. Working knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, and construction practices related to piping installation, testing, quality assurance, and commissioning support activities.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, quantity tracking systems, and construction automation tools. Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, coordinate across engineering and construction organizations, and provide technical direction to supervision, subcontractors, and craft professionals.
  • Maintain, promote, and cultivate a strong safety culture and work environment consistent with Bechtel's Zero Accident Philosophy. Able to work extended work schedules and night shift as required to support project execution plans and schedules. Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H), quality, and continuous improvement. Must have work authorization within the United States of America.
