Summary
Primary Duties:
- Perform engineering level tests such as battery capacity testing, voltage testing, resistance testing, and battery acceptance test for new construction installed banks.
- Perform functional testing for Substation High, Low, and Ground Alarms. Utilize electrical test equipment, special application tools/ software and instruments used in maintaining Substation battery health.
- Develops and maintains a practical working knowledge of chemical hazards / reactions and electrical hazards of different style batteries in daily work activities.
- Coordinates and performs work with multiple departments, including but not limited to: System Health, Design Engineering, Substation Project Planners, Construction Planners, Protection & Control, Predictive Maintenance, Supply Chain Buyers, IT Comm, and NGN Program.
- Manage and execute scheduled testing of battery equipment while using IEEE, FERC, and NERC standards and requirements.
- Maintain and install batteries and equipment while using IEEE, FERC, and NERC standards and requirements.
- Provide training to new Battery Specialists as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must qualify as a Substation Journeyman PLUS One (1) year experience as a Substation Journeyman required
- Computer and data entry proficiency required
- Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class "A") required
- Subject to out-of-town work
- Reasonable and necessary overtime required. Requirement to respond to emergency call-outs due to equipment failure, resulting in the loss of power
- This position requires working with aerial equipment, which has weight restrictions of 300 lbs or less
- Must live within a reasonable distance from headquarters (one (1) hour)
- Qualifying tests may be administered

Role Type
Onsite: Requires work to be performed in the field and/or at an APS facility. Depending on the responsibilities of the role, this may include, but is not limited to, working at a power plant, job site, or in the community.
*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
*Role types are subject to change based on business need.
Eligibility:
Must live or relocate within reasonable distance to the headquarters. Reasonable distance is defined as one (1) hour for Metro and State Region locations. Reasonable distance for Troublemen, Local Representatives, and Substation Technicians is defined as thirty (30) minutes for Metro locations and forty-five (45) minutes for State Region locations. Failure to accept a job offer due to the reasonable distance requirement specific to the position will be counted toward the bid restriction as described in Article 13, Section 11
- For jobs in departments (System, Reliability, Hotstick) that require the majority of the work be performed out-of-town and as such, employees/crews are not required to report to the established headquarters unless directed by Leadership; the reasonable distance requirement will be waived*.
*This will not apply to Troublemen, Local Representatives or Substation Technicians
CIP Requirement:
This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
