Job description

About the Role

Our Data Engineering team is looking for an Associate Data Engineer. In this role, you will partner with clients, implementation teams, and internal stakeholders to help deliver high-quality data extracts and distribution solutions from Abacus's core data management platform, which is built on scalable, flexible, and resilient cloud architectures.

This is an early-career opportunity designed for recent graduates who are excited to build a foundation in data engineering, healthcare data, and client-facing delivery. As a trusted partner to the team, you will support client adoption of Abacus's data management offerings while developing hands-on experience in data analysis, mapping, SQL, data quality, and cloud-based data services.

We welcome applications from new graduates, including candidates currently authorized to work in the United States under F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT). Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.

Your day to day

  • Partner with clients, implementation teams, and internal stakeholders to understand data distribution requirements.
  • Perform data analysis, data profiling, and data mapping to support accurate client outputs.
  • Build and maintain data distribution extracts, SQL queries, and scripts with guidance from senior team members.
  • Support optimization of data extract scripts for performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Validate outputs, investigate data issues, and contribute to root cause analysis when discrepancies arise.
  • Document requirements, workflows, data mappings, and technical decisions to support repeatable delivery.
  • Participate in client meetings, project discussions, and internal working sessions to learn requirements and communicate progress.
  • Collaborate with teammates to solve data challenges and contribute to a high-performing, inclusive, and supportive team culture.
  • Bring curiosity and ideas for process improvements, automation, and more efficient ways of working.

What you bring to the team

  • Recent graduate with a Bachelor's or Master's degree, or equivalent academic, project, internship, or professional experience relevant to data engineering, analytics, computer science, information systems, or a related technical field.
  • Strong SQL programming skills, with the ability to write queries, analyze data, and troubleshoot results.
  • Exposure to data analysis, data profiling, reporting, data mapping, or data validation through coursework, internships, projects, research, or prior work experience.
  • Interest in healthcare data and systems, including domains such as membership, claims, provider, or related healthcare data sets.
  • Ability to work with large or complex data sets and apply analytical thinking to solve business and technical problems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to perform root cause analysis on data, processes, and outputs.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage work in a fast-moving environment.
  • Curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and healthcare data concepts.
  • Desire to contribute individually while also collaborating closely with others.

What we would like to see, but not required

  • Experience or coursework involving AWS, Azure, Databricks, Spark, or other cloud-based data platforms.
  • Experience or exposure to Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouse technologies.
  • Academic, internship, or project experience involving performance tuning, query optimization, ETL, or data pipeline development.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is $30/hour or $62,400 per annum.

What you'll get in return

  • Unlimited paid time off: recharge when you need it.
  • Work from anywhere: flexibility to fit your life.
  • Comprehensive health coverage: multiple plan options to choose from.
  • Equity for every employee: share in our success.
