Job description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications among the robotics community for two full-time, teaching-oriented, non-tenured, continuing contract faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering, at the rank of Industry Assistant Professor, with a start date as early as January 1, 2025. The primary responsibilities of the positions are classroom and laboratory teaching and project/thesis mentoring in Robotics and Embodied Artificial Intelligence (AI). The successful candidate should be an excellent teacher and have research experience in robotics and embodied AI fields. The candidate must be able to mentor projects/theses in support of our MS program in Robotics and undergraduate courses in our Robotics minor.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in engineering or science closely related to Robotics, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of the basics of one or multiple fundamental areas in robotics (perception & sensing, planning & control, learning, and design). Strong hands-on experience in robotics theories and software tools is a plus. Candidates must demonstrate clear potential for scholarship, leadership, and curricular innovation. All candidates must demonstrate or show potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring.
Application Instructions
Requirement
The expectations for the Industry Assistant Professor primarily involve teaching robotics courses per semester. This position is not required to conduct research, although if the candidate wishes to, the teaching assignment can be arranged to allow the candidate to engage in funded research, and the candidate is welcome to leverage the Robotics and AI research networks and resources within the department, the school, and the whole university. The initial appointment may take 2-3 years, and the position is renewable afterward. Ideal candidates for the role could include postdocs and research fellows who are actively involved in robotic research in either academia or industry R&D labs.

About Us
New York University (NYU) is one of the top private universities in the United States with an unparalleled network of global campuses and academic centers. NYU's Tandon School of Engineering, located in the heart of Brooklyn, dates back to 1854, the founding year of both the New York University School of Civil Engineering and Architecture and the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute. Backed by an historic commitment of $1 billion and under the new leadership of Juan de Pablo as the University's Executive Vice President for Global Science and Technology and Tandon's Executive Dean, the Engineering School is entering an exciting new phase to recruit world-class faculty conducting groundbreaking basic and applied research in key areas. We are home to a community of renowned faculty and undergraduate and graduate students united in a mission to understand and create technology that powers cities, enables worldwide communication, fights climate change, and builds healthier, safer, and more equitable real and digital worlds. The school's culture centers on encouraging rigorous, interdisciplinary collaboration and research; fostering inclusivity, entrepreneurial thinking, and diverse perspectives; and creating innovative and accessible pathways for lifelong learning in STEM.
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NYU Tandon educates future engineers who develop the physical systems and devices that modern society demands, from automobiles to air conditioning, prosthetic limbs to autonomous machines, and rocket engines to satellites. Our faculty is breaking new ground in controls and robotic systems, computer-integrated mechanical and electromechanical systems, the modeling and simulation of complex systems, and fluid and thermal systems, among other areas. Recent research has led to breakthroughs in fast trajectory planning for legged robots and robot manipulators; accurate full-body proprioception for soft robotics; robust robot localization and navigation in urban environments; robots that aid in the education of children with autism; lightweight new protective materials with applications in national defense, sports medicine, and transportation; technological methods of leading wildlife away from danger areas; aspects of complex urban systems that impact how people live and work in dense urban environments, etc.
NYU Tandon is committed to substantially increase the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups in STEM and we encourage candidates from such groups to apply. We aspire to create a climate where diversity and inclusion are not only appreciated but considered an asset for creativity and innovation, and we seek faculty who have a real passion for a culturally diverse environment. We take pride in our high numbers of female students and students who are the first in their family to go to college. NYU belongs to the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches, and our faculty are supported by a range of work-life balance programs provided by the NYU Office of Work Life.
