Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty (paid) training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT.\r\n\r\nKey Responsibilities: \r\nDuties of this position include, but are not limited to:\r\n\r\n Supervising and instructing inmates in skilled craftwork found in the metal fabrication industries, methods and techniques of manufacturing process/service, proper use of tools/materials, necessary safety rules/procedures maintenance and cleaning/repairing of equipment.\r\n Assigning work to inmates.\r\n Generating and maintaining cost reports, production inventory data and time records.\r\n Maintaining discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas.\r\n Conducting performance reviews of inmates.\r\n Related duties as required (See Example of Duties section).\r\n\r\nAbout Us:\r\nThe MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution is a level 4/5, high/maximum security level multi-mission facility for adult males. Based on its offender population, it is the largest correctional facility in New England. It came into being on May 15, 2001 as the result of the consolidation of the Walker Reception and Special Management Unit and the MacDougall Correctional Institution and sits on a combined 140 acres.\r\n\r\nThe facility focuses on education both academic (ABE, Pre-GED, GED, Special Education, TSOL), and at the MacDougall Building (Vocational Maintenance, Electro Mechanical, Micro Computers, Electronic Repair, Dental, and Commercial Cleaning). Programming is also a vital component of our mission and includes Parenting Skills, Sex Offender Treatment, Family Issues, Beyond Fear, Addiction Services, Aftercare and Fellowship AA/NA meetings.\r\n\r\nThe Industries program employs up to 70 inmates, some of whom graduated from various Vocational Education programs. A Regional Commissary employs up to 60 inmates. Others are employed in various capacities in the Food Service Operation, commercial cleaning and other janitorial functions essential to the hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness of the facility.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor and providing instruction for a group of inmates engaged in the manufacture, production or processing of products or services in the occupation indicated by the parenthetical title of the class.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n\r\n Supervises and instructs inmates in proper methods and techniques of manufacturing process or service, proper use of tools and materials, necessary safety rules and procedures and maintenance, cleaning and repair of equipment;\r\n Plans and routes work to be performed, assigning inmates to specific tasks;\r\n Estimates needs and requisitions supplies, materials and equipment necessary;\r\n Supervises maintenance and/or repair of equipment or arranges for outside service and material;\r\n Maintains cost, production inventory and time records and makes necessary reports on operations;\r\n Maintains discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas;\r\n Maintains appropriate security procedures for tools, equipment, chemicals, etc.;\r\n Reviews and evaluates performance of assigned inmates;\r\n Submits reports relative to inmate disciplinary actions, recommendations for 'good time', furloughs, reassignments, etc.;\r\n May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies;\r\n May be required to operate a motor vehicle;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involved in the areas of production, production planning and/or quality control which must have included some responsibility for the production output of other workers. \r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience supervising within a production manufacturing environment.\r\n Experience in metalworking processes (e.g., welding, milling, drilling, lathe turning CNC operation, and sheet metal fabrication).\r\n Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and CAD drawings.\r\n Experience with industry computer programming such as Mastercam, AutoCAD, SolidWorks and CNC software and machinery.\r\n Experience training, instructing, coaching and monitoring the production output of a diverse group of people.\r\n Experience enforcing safety protocols and conducting inspections.\r\n Experience tracking production metrics, scheduling work and improving efficiency to meet deadlines.\r\n Attention to detail and quality control mindset.\r\n Experience with fast paced, ever changing production environments.\r\n Experience in problem solving and building positive and productive working relationships both up and down the chain of command.\r\n Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel for creating and modifying spreadsheets, and Word for preparing correspondence.\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain either a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License, a Commercial Driver's License or both.\r\n Incumbents may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n\r\n
