How much do fifo mining jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for fifo mining in the United States is $97,771.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a FIFO Mining?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) mining job involves traveling to a remote mining site for a set period, then returning home for scheduled time off. These jobs are common in Australia and other mining regions where operations are far from major cities. Workers are typically provided with accommodation, meals, and transport by the employer. Shifts can be long, often 12-hour days for several weeks at a time, followed by a break. FIFO roles exist in various fields, including engineering, machinery operation, and trade services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the FIFO Mining position?

To thrive in a FIFO (Fly-In, Fly-Out) Mining role, you need a strong understanding of mining operations, safety regulations, and physical fitness, typically supported by relevant trade qualifications or tickets such as High-Risk Work Licenses. Familiarity with mining machinery, computerized maintenance systems, and safety protocols like MSHA or Australian Mining Induction is common. Strong communication, adaptability, and resilience are valued soft skills, as the role often involves working remotely in teams under challenging conditions. These competencies are essential for maintaining productivity, ensuring safety, and succeeding in the unique, high-demand FIFO mining environment.

What are some common challenges of working in a FIFO Mining role?

One of the most common challenges of working in FIFO Mining is adapting to the extended roster cycles, which can mean spending several weeks away from home and family. The remote and sometimes isolated locations can also impact social life and require individuals to adjust to different living accommodations and routines. However, employers often offer excellent support systems, including team-building activities, mental health resources, and well-equipped camp facilities to help employees stay comfortable and connected. Developing good time management and maintaining a healthy work-life balance during off-roster periods can make the experience both rewarding and sustainable.

  • Monitor drilling parameters including rotation speed, bit pressure, water flow, and penetration rates to optimize core recovery and equipment performance
  • Ensure maximum core recovery, correct handling, and proper placement of core in trays
  • Identify and respond to changing ground conditions and communicate technical or geological issues to supervisors and geologists
  • Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and minor mechanical repairs to minimize downtime
