What is an arbitrage?

An arbitrage job involves identifying and exploiting price differences of the same or similar assets across different markets to make a profit. Arbitrage professionals work in finance, trading, and e-commerce, using analytical skills and technology to execute quick transactions. This role often requires knowledge of market trends, data analysis, and risk management. Successful arbitrageurs capitalize on inefficiencies before they disappear, making speed and accuracy crucial to their work.

What does an arbitrage do?

A typical day in arbitrage involves monitoring various markets for price discrepancies, analyzing data to identify profitable trading opportunities, and swiftly executing trades. Professionals in this field often start early to catch market openings and may spend considerable time researching trends or automating their trading strategies using specialized tools. The role frequently requires collaboration with risk managers and other traders to optimize portfolio performance and manage potential exposure. Staying up-to-date with market news and regulatory changes is also essential, making the work both dynamic and intellectually challenging.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in arbitrage, and why are they important?

To thrive in arbitrage, you need strong analytical skills, financial acumen, and in-depth knowledge of market trends, often supported by degrees in finance, economics, or related fields. Proficiency with quantitative analysis software, trading platforms, and sometimes relevant certifications like the CFA can be crucial for success. Attention to detail, quick decision-making, and effective communication are key soft skills that help arbitrage professionals excel in dynamic environments. These competencies are vital because they ensure accurate evaluation of market opportunities and effective execution of trades within tight timeframes.

Can I make money from arbitrage?

Arbitrage involves buying goods or assets at a lower price and selling them at a higher price to make a profit. Success depends on market knowledge, timing, and transaction costs, and it often requires quick decision-making and risk management skills. While it can be profitable, it also carries risks and is not guaranteed income.

Blackstone is the world’s largest alternative asset manager. We seek to create positive economic impact and long-term value for our investors, the companies we invest in, and the communities in which we work. We do this by using extraordinary people and flexible capital to help companies solve problems. Our $1.1 trillion in assets under management include investment vehicles focused on private equity, real estate, public debt and equity, infrastructure, life sciences, growth equity, opportunistic, non-investment grade credit, real assets and secondary funds, all on a global basis.

Job Description

This role involves working closely with the Equity Capital Markets (ECM) and Blackstone Multi-Strategy Investing (MSI) teams to originate, structure, value, hedge, and trade equity-linked securities, including convertible bonds and corporate derivatives. The position also requires collaboration with the broader MSI team on event-driven strategies, capital structure arbitrage, merger arbitrage, and liquid credit opportunities. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex transactions and collaborate across multiple teams to drive innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage expertise in convertible bond valuation and trading to support deal execution and risk management.
  • Develop and implement hedging strategies for equity-linked securities to optimize risk-adjusted returns.
  • Collaborate with the MSI team to identify and execute opportunities in event-driven strategies, including merger arbitrage and capital structure arbitrage.
  • Work on liquid credit strategies, integrating equity-linked securities expertise with broader credit market opportunities.
  • Partner with ECM and MSI teams to align equity-linked securities strategies with broader investment objectives.
Qualifications

Blackstone seeks to hire individuals who are highly motivated, intelligent, and have demonstrated excellence in prior endeavors. In addition to strong analytical and quantitative skills, the successful candidate should have:

  • Deep expertise in equity capital markets and a strong understanding of convertible bonds, derivatives, and event-driven strategies.
  • Capability to identify and capitalize on event-driven opportunities across equity-linked securities and broader capital markets.
  • Track record of working effectively across teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with strong ability to form professional relationships.

The duties and responsibilities described here are not exhaustive and additional assignments, duties, or responsibilities may be required of this position. Assignments, duties, and responsibilities may be changed at any time, with or without notice, by Blackstone in its sole discretion.
