A youth coordinator oversees the design and implementation of programs or activities to support youth education and development. These programs are often sports, education, counseling, or church-related. Their duties include working with youth and their families to provide support, counseling, and programs that develop skills and character. Requirements vary, but you often need a bachelor’s degree or experience with youth outreach to succeed in this career. Your job is to use your skills, qualifications, and experience to arrange and conduct great youth and teen programs.

What are some of the most common challenges youth coordinators face when engaging with diverse youth populations?

Youth Coordinators often work with young people from a wide range of backgrounds, which can present challenges in addressing varying needs, interests, and communication styles. Building trust and rapport takes time, especially when participants have had negative experiences with authority figures or institutions. Additionally, balancing program objectives with youth-driven interests requires flexibility and creative problem-solving. Effective coordinators regularly seek feedback, adapt activities, and foster inclusive environments to ensure all voices are heard and valued.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a youth coordinator, and why are they important?

Job description

Position Summary

Avodah Ministries at Moments of Hope Church (MOHC) is seeking an Avodah Youth Coordinator to lead and oversee the day-to-day operation of our Middle School and High School ministries.

The Youth Coordinator will own the systems, people, programming, volunteers, communication, events, safety, and logistics necessary to build a healthy, growing, and sustainable youth ministry. This includes Wednesday Night Youth, small groups, retreats, trips, outreach, student leadership, parent communication, and ministry programming.

Core Responsibilities

1. Lead Youth Ministry

Own the day-to-day operation and health of Middle School and High School ministry.

  • Lead and oversee Wednesday Night Youth, small groups, retreats, trips, and special events.
  • Develop and maintain the Youth Ministry calendar and programming rhythms.
  • Build systems for registration, communication, volunteers, events, and student discipleship.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, develop, and shepherd youth ministry volunteers.
  • Develop student leaders and create meaningful opportunities for students to serve and lead.
  • Serve as the primary operational point of contact for youth parents and families.
  • Provide appropriate pastoral care while knowing when significant situations should be escalated to the MOHC Discipleship Team.
  • Maintain appropriate safety, child-protection, and risk-management practices.
  • Manage Youth Ministry resources and budget in collaboration with the MOHC Discipleship Team and appropriate MOHC leadership.

2. Build Youth Ministry

The Youth Coordinator is expected not simply to maintain existing programs but to build the ministry for future growth.

  • Develop sustainable systems, processes, and leadership structures.
  • Establish a healthy volunteer culture that develops leaders rather than simply filling positions.
  • Create a clear discipleship pathway from Middle School through High School and into Young Adults.
  • Evaluate ministry effectiveness and make changes when needed.
  • Identify opportunities for growth and proactively develop solutions.
  • Build a ministry culture in which students are known, discipled, equipped, and challenged to follow Jesus.

3. Develop Youth Outreach & Community Engagement

A significant part of this role will be developing new ways for MOHC to reach students and families who are not currently connected to the church.

The Youth Coordinator will:

  • Develop a Youth Outreach Strategy in partnership with the MOHC Discipleship Team.
  • Develop outreach events, programs, and experiences designed to engage students outside the existing MOHC community.
  • Explore partnerships with local schools, athletic programs, community organizations, and other appropriate networks.
  • Develop strategies for using our new facility as a platform for youth outreach and community engagement.
  • Equip students and volunteers to participate in relational evangelism and invite others into the life of Avodah.
  • Create pathways for students reached through outreach to become connected to small groups, discipleship, worship, and the broader life of MOHC.
  • Evaluate outreach efforts and develop new initiatives based on what is effectively reaching students and families.

The goal is for outreach to become part of the identity of Avodah Youth, not simply an occasional event.
