Description

Job Summary

The Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker assists in maintaining the City of Fountain's parks, trails, open spaces, athletic fields, and recreational facilities during peak operational seasons. Under close supervision, this position performs a variety of routine groundskeeping and facility maintenance tasks to help ensure public spaces remain clean, safe, and well-maintained for community use. Seasonal employees support full-time staff by completing basic landscape upkeep, trail maintenance, sports field preparation, facility cleaning, and event setup and teardown.


This temporary, entry-level position provides support for essential seasonal operations while promoting a positive experience for park visitors. Employees in this role work collaboratively with coworkers, volunteers, and community members while learning and applying foundational parks maintenance skills in a team-oriented environment.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complies with all City policies and procedures, as well as applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and requirements related to the performance of assigned duties.
  • Demonstrates a respectful, collaborative, and team-oriented approach to work and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, volunteers, and the public.
  • Assists with general groundskeeping tasks including litter collection, mulching, weed removal, basic landscape upkeep, and general park beautification.
  • Assists in maintaining trails and open spaces by clearing debris, reporting erosion issues, and helping support safe public access.
  • Assists with basic sports field preparation including lining fields, raking infields, dragging surfaces (if trained), placing bulk field materials, and supporting practices or events.
  • Cleans and maintains park restrooms, shelters, pavilions, playground areas, picnic sites, and other park facilities to ensure safe and sanitary use.
  • Assists with basic repairs to playground equipment, fences, benches, signs, trash receptacles, and other park amenities under supervision.
  • Supports preparation, setup, and cleanup for facility rentals, community events, youth programs, and special activities.
  • Assists with snow removal, salting, sanding, and de-icing of sidewalks, trails, playgrounds, and courts when seasonally appropriate and assigned.
  • Safely operates and performs basic upkeep on hand tools and small equipment including push mowers, string trimmers, rakes, shovels, pruning tools, and painting equipment.
  • Works cooperatively with volunteers of all ages on community projects, beautification efforts, and park improvement initiatives.
  • Reports safety hazards, damaged facilities, equipment malfunctions, and maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Provides courteous and professional customer service while representing the City in public spaces.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Work Environment

The Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker performs work primarily outdoors in parks, athletic fields, trails, open spaces, landscaped areas, and other City-owned recreational facilities throughout the year. The position is routinely exposed to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, ice, and direct sunlight, and may occasionally work in dusty, muddy, or uneven terrain.


The position regularly operates hand tools, power tools, and grounds maintenance equipment and is exposed to moving mechanical parts, loud noise, vibration, airborne dust, pollen, vegetation, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, cleaning products, and other materials commonly associated with parks and grounds maintenance. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and required when performing assigned duties.


Work may involve interacting with the public, volunteers, contractors, and community organizations while performing maintenance activities or supporting special events. The position may require occasional evening, weekend, holiday, overtime, standby, or emergency response work, including snow removal, severe weather response, and other operational needs.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age for safety and insurance requirements.
  • Some experience with basic yardwork, lawn care, or the use of simple tools such as push mowers, weed trimmers, rakes, or shovels is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently or as part of a team, and complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform physical labor including standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Ability to read and understand basic safety rules, product labels, and simple work instructions.
  • A valid Colorado Driver License is preferred but not required (depending on assignment).


Required Capabilities

  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out basic instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve simple, routine problems that arise during daily maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to read and understand basic safety rules, product labels, cleaning instructions, simple work orders, and written procedures. Ability to accurately complete basic checklists, cleaning logs, or simple maintenance forms as assigned.
  • This position requires sufficient vision to safely perform groundskeeping tasks, observe surroundings, identify hazards, and use hand tools and simple lawn equipment.
  • Ability to hear and understand normal conversational speech and basic warning sounds needed to safely perform assigned duties.
  • This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and other basic physical movements while performing outdoor maintenance tasks in varied environments.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand tools and simple grounds maintenance equipment such as push mowers, string trimmers, rakes, shovels, and other small tools associated with routine park and facility upkeep.
  • Basic proficiency in using simple technology, such as mobile devices or electronic work order systems, may be required depending on assignment.
