What is x ray crystallography?

An X-ray Crystallography job involves analyzing the atomic and molecular structure of crystals using X-ray diffraction techniques. Professionals in this field prepare crystal samples, operate X-ray diffraction equipment, and interpret diffraction patterns to determine the arrangement of atoms in a material. These roles are common in research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and material science industries, contributing to drug development, structural biology, and material characterization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in x ray crystallography?

To thrive in X-ray Crystallography, you need a strong background in structural biology, chemistry, or physics, with experience in crystallization techniques and data analysis. Familiarity with X-ray diffraction instruments, crystallography software such as CCP4 or Phenix, and potentially a relevant certification or advanced degree is important. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with research teams. These qualities ensure accurate experimental results, successful structure determination, and the ability to work efficiently in multidisciplinary scientific environments.

What are some typical challenges faced in x ray crystallography roles?

In X-ray Crystallography roles, one common challenge is successfully growing high-quality crystals suitable for diffraction, which can require persistence and creative problem-solving. Interpreting complex data and troubleshooting issues with instrumentation or software are also frequent aspects of the work. Collaboration with chemists, biologists, and computational scientists is often necessary to optimize experiments and analyze results. This dynamic environment helps build versatile skills but also requires adaptability and strong teamwork for effective progress.

How much does a X Ray Crystallography make?

X Ray Crystallographers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $60,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced roles in research or industry may offer higher compensation, especially for those with specialized skills in crystallography software and instrumentation.

Is X-ray crystallography difficult?

X-ray crystallography as a profession involves complex scientific techniques that require strong knowledge of chemistry, physics, and data analysis. It often demands attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and proficiency with specialized software and laboratory equipment, making it a challenging but rewarding field for those with a scientific background.

What degree do you need to be a X Ray Crystallography?

To work in X-ray crystallography, individuals typically need at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field. Many positions, especially research or advanced roles, require a master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. Strong skills in laboratory techniques and data analysis are also important.

Scientist - Protein Biochemist

What you will do

Let's do this. Let's change the world. In this vital role you will be responsible for designing, planning, and executing the generation of key enabling reagents that support the structure determination of target molecules via X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). You will collaborate closely with structural biologists within the group and contribute to advancing our drug discovery efforts. The ideal candidate must possess flexibility in applying their knowledge to new areas of study and have strong interpersonal and communication skills to thrive in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Protein Biochemistry: Be actively involved in the design and execution of molecular cloning and protein expression strategies with the Amgen Discovery Protein Science team or CROs; design and execute purification strategies to support the structure determination of drug targets.
  • Collaborative Support: Work closely with structural biologists to generate high-quality protein samples for structural biology techniques, particularly X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.
  • Method Development: Develop and optimize purification protocols and reagents, ensuring high protein purity, homogeneity, and stability for structural studies.
