Job description

JOB PURPOSE
The Communications Specialist will apply entry level business knowledge and techniques to assist in
writing and editing of publications, news releases, public service announcements, and
internal/external information programs, as directed; manage/organize/provide assistance to
requesting parties for public records requests; research/respond to media inquiries; and plan
and/or direct special projects. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Prepare by concept, writing/editing of company
informative brochures, newsletters, speeches and other publications; prepare, coordinate and
schedule visual preparation/photography for projects, publications, brochures and internal/external
informative programs via computer networks/websites/social media. Create advertising and
promotional campaigns by concept, writing, editing, recording of ads and public service
announcements for print, broadcast and social media. Provide requesting parties with public records
information by researching customer accounts and/or organizing requests with various
areas/departments for information needed in compliance with the Tennessee Public Records Act and
Sunshine Law: compile data received for release to recipients; calculate/collect appropriate fees.
maintain records of information provided; and set up meetings for inspection of public records.
Assist in media relations' activities such as media calls, media research, generate story ideas,
analyzing media coverage, participating in interviews, coaching staff, and sending media updates to
staff. Generate story ideas for use in internal/external communications. Assist in
maintaining/troubleshooting the employee business television system which includes
creating/designing/writing/ editing informational slideshows; and scheduling activities. Assist in
coordination, story line, writing copy, production and video editing of MLGW's employee business
television system and television show Memphis Energized; assist in coordination of concept and
creation of informational slid shows, design, writing, editing, and scheduling. Plan and/or direct
special projects as assigned such as participation in special events, community partnerships and
workshops. Stay abreast of current events and developments in the field of
communication/journalism and news features. Operate a division vehicle and utilization of cameras,
equipment, computer hardware equipment and software
applications. Perform other duties as directed.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must have a valid driver's license from state of residence.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in journalism, Communications, Advertising, Public Relations or related field.
EXPERIENCE Must have 0-2 years of experience in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or Advertising.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must successfully complete NIMS training within one year of entering job. Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for
brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and dexterity in operating office equipment. This position requires vision, hearing and
speaking abilities.
