Job description

The Editor/Writer II is responsible for effectively producing a wide range of communications to advance the strategic marketing initiatives of Keck Medicine of USC. This individual will collaborate with other marketing department members, as well as work with other Keck Medicine employees and non-Keck Medicine stakeholders, to create marketing content that aligns with the department's strategic initiatives. The incumbent must understand the business of Keck Medicine and its marketing department, communicate with others outside of the health system, and have a presence at specified Keck Medicine/University of Southern California events and department and stakeholder meetings. The Editor/Writer II is an editorial position responsible for planning, creating, writing, producing, and proofreading marketing content on a variety of topics for Keck Medicine of USC, including articles (blog articles, patient stories, magazine articles, bios, etc.) and other editorial content, as well as multimedia content to be distributed by the social media team. This role requires conducting strategic analysis (including SEO and other research), generating effective editorial topics for target audiences, conducting background research on a variety of business and medical topics, conducting interviews with internal and external stakeholders, and accurately writing, producing, and proofreading content.

Essential Duties:

  • Write and edit editorial content for Keck Medicine of USC, such as blog articles, patient stories, magazine articles and bios.
  • Research, verify, read, proof, edit and rewrite copy. Ensure accuracy and completeness of projects. Interview sources when appropriate.
  • Use the department's tools to conduct strategic analysis and background research, and to develop effective content topic and outputs.
  • Use the department's software platforms to create multimedia content to be distributed by the social media team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The Health System reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's Degree In Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field
  • Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
  • Req 3 years minimum experience, 5 years preferred.
  • Req Experience with creating, writing, editing, proofreading, and preparing materials for publication.
  • Req Proven ability as a self-starter and problem-solver who evaluates a situations, articulates possible solutions and earns the respect of others by carefully listening and presenting productive responses.
  • Req Proficiency in Word Office Suite.
  • Req Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
  • Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req Mastery of AP Stylebook writing guides.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Experience writing and editing of materials closely related to health system activities.
  • Pref Photography skills and InDesign.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The hourly rate range for this position is $33.00 - $54.02.
