Working Project Manager information

What is a working project manager?

A Working Project Manager is a professional who not only oversees and coordinates projects but also actively participates in the hands-on tasks required to complete the project. Unlike traditional project managers who focus primarily on planning, budgeting, and supervising, Working Project Managers split their time between management duties and direct involvement in project work. This dual role helps ensure better communication, faster problem-solving, and efficient project execution. They are common in industries like construction, IT, and manufacturing, where practical expertise is essential for successful project delivery.

How does a working project manager balance hands-on tasks with team leadership responsibilities?

A Working Project Manager often splits their time between directly contributing to project tasks and overseeing the project's progress. This dual role requires strong time management and prioritization skills, as they must ensure their own work is completed without neglecting leadership duties like coordinating team efforts, resolving conflicts, and maintaining communication with stakeholders. It's common to set aside specific times for managerial tasks, such as team meetings and reporting, while also actively participating in technical or operational work alongside the team. This balance fosters strong team relationships and ensures the manager stays attuned to project details and challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a working project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Working Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, relevant industry knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Primavera, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills set successful candidates apart in coordinating teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards.

What is the difference between Working Project Manager vs Project Coordinator?

AspectWorking Project ManagerProject Coordinator
CredentialsPM certifications (PMP, CAPM), relevant experienceOften entry-level, may have certifications like CAPM
Work EnvironmentLeads projects, manages teams, responsible for deliverablesSupports project tasks, coordinates schedules and resources
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for project leadership rolesCommonly supports project managers in various sectors

The Working Project Manager typically holds more responsibilities, including leading projects and managing teams, often requiring certifications like PMP. In contrast, the Project Coordinator primarily supports project activities, focusing on scheduling and communication. Both roles are essential in project execution, but the Working Project Manager has a broader scope and leadership duties.

What does a working project manager do at work?

A working project manager plans, executes, and oversees projects to ensure they are completed on time, within scope, and budget. They coordinate teams, manage resources, communicate with stakeholders, and use tools like Gantt charts or project management software to track progress and address issues as they arise.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Project Manager – Industrial Construction

Job Description

As a Senior Project Manager specializing in industrial construction, you will lead complex projects on active construction sites and ensure they are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. You will combine hands-on field management with strategic oversight, serving as the primary point of contact for stakeholders and translating business objectives into successful project outcomes. Your ability to coordinate teams, manage risk, and uphold rigorous safety and quality standards will be central to the role.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all phases of industrial construction projects from initial planning and design through execution, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Maintain a regular, hands-on presence on active job sites to oversee daily activities, monitor progress, and address real-time challenges.
  • Coordinate and align work among contractors, subcontractors, engineers, and client stakeholders to maintain project momentum and resolve conflicts.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, clearly communicating project status, risks, and milestones while aligning deliverables with their business objectives.
  • Develop, manage, and track project budgets, ensuring cost control, accurate forecasting, and timely approval and processing of change orders.
  • Create, maintain, and update project schedules, sequencing work to minimize disruption and keep projects on track in fast-paced site conditions.
  • Implement and enforce strict safety protocols, ensuring thorough adherence to OSHA standards and fostering a zero-incident safety culture on all job sites.
  • Oversee quality control processes, verifying that work meets design specifications, building codes, and industry standards.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed project documentation, including reports, logs, meeting minutes, and change management records.
  • Lead cross-functional teams with strong, visible leadership, setting expectations, providing direction, and promoting collaboration and accountability.
  • Identify project risks early and proactively develop mitigation strategies to address issues related to schedule, budget, safety, and quality.
  • Manage multiple concurrent industrial projects, balancing competing priorities and resources while maintaining clear communication with all stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in project delivery, including the adoption of lean construction methodologies and best practices where applicable.
  • Collaborate closely with design and construction partners on design-build or fast-track industrial projects to ensure integrated and efficient delivery.
  • Utilize project management software tools such as Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, and Bluebeam to plan, track, and report on project performance.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field.
  • PMP certification or an equivalent project management credential.
  • Minimum of 7 years of hands-on project management experience, preferably in industrial construction or industrial real estate environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working on active construction sites with direct field involvement rather than purely office or remote-based work.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex industrial projects from inception through completion.
  • Deep understanding of industrial construction processes, sequencing, and building codes.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and motivate cross-functional teams and field crews.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and clearly with stakeholders ranging from site personnel to Senior executives.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in documentation, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction safety standards, including OSHA requirements, and a strong commitment to maintaining safe, zero-incident job sites.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in high-pressure, fast-paced site conditions.
  • Experience managing change orders and navigating change management within construction projects.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools, including platforms such as Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, and Bluebeam.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience leading projects specifically in industrial construction, including warehouse, distribution center, manufacturing, or logistics facility projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management and driving innovation in project delivery and construction practices.
  • Experience with lean construction methodologies and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Background in design-build or fast-track industrial projects, with the ability to manage accelerated schedules and integrated teams.
  • Additional safety credentials such as OSHA 30-Hour certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret project data, assess performance, and support decision-making.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily remote or on active industrial construction sites, requiring regular on-site presence and engagement with field operations. You will work in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly and where safety, quality, and schedule performance are critical. The position involves close collaboration with contractors, subcontractors, engineers, and client stakeholders, using industry-standard project management technologies such as Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, and Bluebeam to manage and report on project activities. The work environment emphasizes a strong safety culture, rigorous adherence to construction standards and building codes, and a collaborative approach that supports innovation and continuous improvement in industrial project delivery.
