About the Opportunity


We’re growing! Isaacs & Isaacs Law Firm is expanding its Human Resources department and is seeking an experienced Human Resources Director to lead people operations, HR strategy, compliance, employee relations, and talent initiatives for a growing law firm.


This is an exciting in-office leadership opportunity based in Louisville, Kentucky. The ideal candidate will serve as a strategic business partner to executive leadership while helping develop, implement, and manage Human Resources programs that support the firm’s greatest asset: its employees.


The Human Resources Director will play a key role in building scalable HR infrastructure, supporting firmwide growth, strengthening employee engagement, and ensuring consistency across multiple offices and states.


Key Responsibilities


Strategic HR Leadership

  • Serve as a strategic partner to firm leadership on all people-related matters, including workforce planning, organizational design, employee engagement, and firm culture.
  • Develop and execute HR strategies aligned with the firm’s growth plans, including expansion into new states and offices.
  • Advise executive leadership, the CEO, and practice group leaders on employee relations, performance management, organizational issues, and workforce planning.
  • Own and maintain the employee handbook, HR policies, and procedures firmwide, ensuring consistency across offices and states.
  • Develop and manage annual HR department budgets and perform periodic cost, staffing, and productivity analysis.

Talent Acquisition & Onboarding

  • Oversee recruiting and hiring strategy for staff, administrative, and business professional roles firmwide.
  • Partner with practice group leaders on attorney and associate attorney hiring logistics.
  • Develop and refine onboarding programs to support strong new hire integration, engagement, and retention.
  • Recommend and maintain organizational structure and staffing levels to support company goals and growth objectives.

Employee Relations & Performance Management

  • Lead performance management processes, including annual review cycles, goal-setting, coaching, and development planning.
  • Manage complex employee relations matters, investigations, disciplinary actions, and workplace concerns with sound judgment and discretion.
  • Foster a positive, professional, and high-performing workplace culture.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve employee engagement, retention, communication, and accountability.

Compensation, Benefits & Payroll Oversight

  • Oversee firmwide compensation strategy, salary benchmarking, and annual compensation review processes.
  • Direct administration of employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, 401(k), and related vendor and broker relationships.
  • Provide oversight of multi-state payroll operations to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and external vendors to support efficient HR, benefits, and payroll processes.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure firmwide compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, and multi-state labor law requirements.
  • Maintain and audit personnel records, HRIS data integrity, required employment postings, and related compliance documentation.
  • Manage employment compliance risk as the firm grows into new jurisdictions.
  • Ensure HR policies and processes align with applicable legal requirements and business needs.

HR Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and support HR team members, including HR and payroll staff.
  • Set department priorities, provide direction, and review team performance.
  • Build HR department infrastructure, workflows, and processes that can scale with continued firm growth.
  • Promote accountability, responsiveness, and excellent internal customer service within the HR function.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8+ years of progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years of HR leadership experience.
  • Law firm or professional services experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-state HR compliance and payroll oversight.
  • Experience with HRIS and payroll systems required; Paylocity experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, and multi-state employment compliance.
  • Proven experience managing employee relations issues, workplace investigations, and disciplinary matters with discretion and sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of organizational development practices and change management.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to advise executive leadership and senior stakeholders credibly and professionally.
  • Experience building, improving, or scaling HR functions in a growing organization.

Preferred Certifications

  • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, CEBS, or equivalent senior-level HR certification strongly preferred.
