Job description

Job Description This is a year-round and in-person position. PURPOSE OF POSITION: The basic purpose of assignments will be to orient the employee in the application of academic theory and basic principles as they pertain to railroad signal engineering. A main focus of the assignments will be upgrading signal drawings and plans using AutoCAD.

Duties and Responsibilities: Assists Signal Management in the design and layout of railroad signal projects. This includes applying basic engineering concepts, performing calculations, and developing sketches of proposed designs. Assists in other Signal project areas which will enhance the intern's engineering education.

These projects may include assistance with engineering plans for power generation and consumption, inspection services during construction, preparation of local State and Federal permits, utility locates, and other related activities. Performs routine drafting and utilizes department's CADD system and software to develop drawings, graphs, tables, and reports as required. Gathers, develops, analyzes, and presents operational data from railroad work programs or other railroad business.

FACTOR 1: Technical and Operational Knowledge Knowledge of basic engineering concepts and principles. Knowledge of advanced math (geometry, algebra, and trigonometry) for use in performing calculations and developing sketches of proposed designs. Ability to operate a computer and use AutoCAD system and software to develop drawings, graphs, tables, and reports.

FACTOR 2: Analytical Skills & Impact Uses knowledge of engineering concepts and principles to gather, develop, analyze and present operations and capital projects. Assistance with projects enables the department to successfully complete projects and adhere to deadlines. FACTOR 3: Supervision and Control This position will not have supervisory responsibilities within ARRC.

FACTOR 4: Communication Contacts are with higher level engineers (Project Managers and Signal personnel) for the purpose of coordinating work assignments, obtaining/providing data, and performance of day-to-day duties. Most of the work will be performed under the direction of Signal Managers. FACTOR 5: Working Conditions Majority of assignments will be performed indoors, with occasional field assignments to assist in design and construction over sight work.

Minimum Qualifications This is a year-round and in-person position. Education Requirements Applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university in a curriculum leading to an Associate or Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology. Work Experience Knowledge of basic engineering concepts and principles is required.

Knowledge of advanced math (geometry, algebra, and trigonometry) is required. Must have the skill and ability to operate a computer and use AutoCAD system and software. Certification/License Requirements Must have a valid driver's license.
