Carter G. Woodson School - Winston-Salem, NC
Facilities & Maintenance Person
The Facilities & Maintenance Person will be assigned primary facilities responsibility for one designated school building. Responsibilities for the assigned building will include supporting the cleanliness and general upkeep of restrooms, classrooms, common areas, and trash removal, as well as monitoring the overall condition and functionality of the building.
In addition to responsibility for the assigned building, the employee will provide maintenance support across the full Carter G. Woodson School campus through the school's work-order process. Work orders will be prioritized based on urgency, safety, operational needs, and direction from the Facilitates Supervisor.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of the assigned buildings and identify facility, maintenance, safety, or repair needs for all buildings.
  • Complete minor repairs and maintenance requests submitted through the facilities work-order system throughout the campus.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and other materials as needed to support school operations.
  • Assemble and install desks, tables, chairs, shelving, furniture, and other equipment.
  • Change light bulbs and perform basic lighting maintenance.
  • Replace ceiling tiles and address other minor building repairs.
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs and replacements, such as fixtures, handles, faucets, and other basic components within the scope of the position.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs, adjustments, and installations.
  • Make minor repairs to doors, door hardware, locks, cabinets, shelving, and other fixtures.
  • Complete basic painting, touch-up work, patching, and minor wall repairs as needed.
  • Install or replace basic hardware, fixtures, signage, and other approved items.
  • Assist with classroom and office setups, room transitions, furniture rearrangement, and other space needs.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials for school events, meetings, athletic activities, trainings, and special programs.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of exterior campus areas, including entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, playgrounds, outdoor learning spaces, and other grounds as assigned.
  • Identify maintenance needs that require a licensed contractor, specialized vendor, or work beyond the scope of the position and report them to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist contractors and vendors with campus access, materials, and project support as directed.
  • Complete assigned maintenance, repair, improvement, and campus projects as needed.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies and communicate when materials need to be replenished.
  • Document completed work and update facilities work orders to reflect the status and completion of assigned requests.
Work-Order Expectations
The Facilities & Maintenance Person will be expected to complete assigned work orders in a timely manner. Work orders may originate from any building or area of the CGW campus and are not limited to the employee's assigned building for facilitates.
The employee should:
  1. Review and prioritize assigned work orders.
  2. Address routine and minor maintenance needs within the scope of the position.
  3. Update the work order to reflect the status of the request.
  4. Communicate any delays, supply needs, or concerns to the Manager of Support Services.
  5. Escalate repairs that require specialized skills, licensed contractors, significant expenditures, or administrative approval.
  6. Mark work orders completed once the requested work has been addressed.

The employee's assigned building will remain the employee's primary facilities responsibility, while campus-wide maintenance work will be performed as work orders and operational needs arise.
Minimum Experience:
2 years of experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, custodial/facilities operations, construction, property maintenance, or a related field preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Forklift certification preferred, if applicable to assigned duties.
  • EPA Section 608 certification preferred only if the employee will be servicing/recovering refrigerants or performing covered HVAC work. NC's maintenance classification specifically notes that EPA certification may be required for positions performing applicable refrigerant work.
  • Relevant trade training or certifications preferred but not required.

The employee will not perform work requiring a state-issued trade license unless properly licensed or working under the direction and supervision of an appropriately licensed contractor or qualified professional.
