Job Description:
This position with the LSU/ITS/UNI Network Engineering team is responsible for assisting in the design, deployment, administration and monitoring of a complex enterprise-class wireless network infrastructure comprised of multiple wireless controllers, over 5000 indoor and outdoor wireless access points, 1000 switches, 100 routers, and related hardware and software. The LSU wireless network supports LSU's faculty, staff, and student population throughout our academic, residential, administrative and athletic venues, providing mission-critical 24/7 communications for our roughly 86,000 unique wireless clients. This position will be expected to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve medium to complex wireless issues as well as mentor fellow analysts, along with other UNI employees and student workers.
Job Responsibilities:
Operations: Validate RF performance, quality, and reliability; Monitor and analyze statistical data to improve system performance. Apply researched and proven methodologies, networking principles, practices, and procedures to configure, maintain, and/or troubleshoot wireless systems and protocols. Perform information gathering, site surveys, and other tasks related to the preparation of wireless infrastructure replacement projects.
Install and upgrade network hardware and software to add new features or secure against vulnerabilities. Configure switches, routers, firewalls, and other network appliances. Manage and operate systems that provide wireless network services. (40%)
Design: Consult with customers, users, other university departments, and/or external organizations to evaluate needs and design solutions to meet business requirements. Work with senior wireless engineers to develop wireless network infrastructures and make recommendations on systems enhancements for optimization. Design and build lab environments to simulate and validate complex network designs.
Evaluate and test vendor hardware and software and recommends purchases consistent with short and long term objectives. Plan and lead network infrastructure lifecycles, replacements, and upgrades. Work with network managers to design, create, and document complex network diagrams and flow charts. Proactively attain knowledge on current and trending technology within the wireless networking field. (25%)
Support: Establish and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders within the LSU community. Cross-train, mentor, and share knowledge with junior team members, fellow departmental analysts, and other university personnel as needed. Participate, or serve as lead, in the investigation, testing, and troubleshooting of moderately complex network outages or issues. Create, maintain, and publish support documentation for internal use. Be available after-hours, as necessary, for escalated network down issues. (25%)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Cisco Unified Wireless Networking to include; 802.11a, b, g , n, ac, and ax, LWAPP, CAPWAP, FlexConnect, WLC and APs, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, including deployment, management and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with AirMagnet and Ekahau diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with controller-based wireless network technologies that utilize tunneled connections to centralize user traffic.
  • Experience implementing and supporting dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6 networks in an enterprise environment.
  • Solid understanding of radio frequencies, wave propagation, and antenna fundamentals
  • Experience resolving and/or managing radio frequency interference from co-channel and outside interference sources.
  • Working knowledge and hands-on experience with wireless scanning and spectrum analysis products.
  • Familiarity with active and passive site survey methods and site design tools for the purpose of efficient and effective deployment of WLAN's.
  • Knowledge of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi related IEEE standards, protocol, and service provider architectures.
  • Knowledge of security protocols and authentication (WPA2, EAPS-TTLS, 802.1x, AAA, RADIUS).
  • Knowledge of 802.1X/802.11i standards.
  • Ability to use tools to detect rogue access points.
  • Experience implementing, configuring, and troubleshooting enterprise switches, routers, wireless access points, and controllers.
  • Familiarity with network access control (NAC) and policy management applications, and AAA management using Radius and TACACS.
  • Experience with network monitoring/analyzing tools.
  • Experience with DHCP, DNS, and IPAM (IP address management) tools.
  • Knowledge of network protocols such as VLANs, STP, TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SNMP, ICMP, VOIP, and QoS
