What is a Western Ranch?

A Western Ranch job typically involves working on a ranch in the western United States, performing tasks such as cattle handling, horse care, fencing, maintenance, and land management. Ranch hands, wranglers, and other positions require physical labor, outdoor skills, and often experience with livestock or machinery. Some jobs may also include guiding guests on horseback or assisting with ranch operations. The work can be demanding but rewarding for those who enjoy the outdoors and a hands-on lifestyle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Western Ranch position, and why are they important?

To thrive at a Western Ranch, you need hands-on experience in livestock care, horsemanship, equipment operation, and general ranch maintenance, often supported by knowledge of agriculture or animal science. Familiarity with tools such as ATVs, tractors, fencing equipment, and sometimes certification in animal handling or first aid is beneficial. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help you adapt to changing needs and coordinate with other ranch staff or managers. These abilities are crucial for maintaining efficient ranch operations, ensuring animal welfare, and supporting a positive work environment in often remote and dynamic settings.

What does a typical day look like working on a Western Ranch?

A typical day on a Western ranch can be quite varied, often starting early with feeding and checking on livestock, monitoring their health, and repairing fences or equipment as needed. Responsibilities may rotate seasonally and include tasks such as calving, herding cattle on horseback, maintaining irrigation systems, or operating heavy machinery. Team members usually work closely together to accomplish daily goals efficiently while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of both animals and people. The work is physically demanding but highly rewarding for those who enjoy the outdoors and value teamwork, with ample opportunities to gain new skills and advance to supervisory roles over time.

For more than 100 years, Lone Mountain Ranch has welcomed guests to beautiful Big Sky, Montana. Set on 148 acres just minutes from Yellowstone National Park, the Ranch is known for authentic Western hospitality, exceptional dining, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable guest experiences.

The beauty of the Ranch may be what guests remember first, but it's the people who create the experiences they remember most. Together, we take pride in caring for this special place—preserving its history, stewarding its natural surroundings, and creating meaningful experiences for every guest who visits.

Whether you're welcoming guests, preparing memorable meals, caring for our historic property, or supporting operations behind the scenes, every role contributes to creating unforgettable experiences while helping shape the next chapter of Lone Mountain Ranch's legacy.

Help Create a Seamless Ranch Experience

As a Front Desk Attendant, you'll serve as a trusted resource for guests throughout their stay. You'll provide thoughtful service, answer questions, coordinate plans, and help ensure guests feel informed and cared for from check-in through departure.

Working as part of our Outpost Operations team, you'll collaborate with transportation, housekeeping, activities, dining, and other departments to deliver a smooth, personalized guest experience. Whether assisting with reservations, responding to changing needs, solving unexpected challenges, or sharing local recommendations, you'll play an important role in making every stay memorable.

What You'll Do
  • Welcome guests with warmth and professionalism while providing efficient check-in and check-out experiences.
  • Assist guests with questions, recommendations, reservations, and itinerary planning throughout their stay.
  • Coordinate guest transportation, activities, dining reservations, and special requests to ensure a seamless experience.
  • Maintain accurate guest information using the Property Management System and other operational software.
  • Escort guests to their cabins and introduce them to Ranch amenities and services.
  • Communicate guest arrivals, departures, preferences, and special requests with housekeeping, transportation, dining, activities, and other departments.
  • Safely transport guests throughout the Ranch using company vehicles when needed.
  • Assist with luggage, guest deliveries, packages, and other arrival or departure needs.
  • Support retail operations, Nordic services, gear rentals, and other Outpost responsibilities during busy periods.
  • Resolve guest concerns with professionalism, empathy, and a solutions-focused approach.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming Front Desk and Outpost environment.
  • Support teammates and assist other departments as needed to ensure an exceptional guest experience.
  • Uphold Lone Mountain Ranch service standards, safety expectations, and company policies.
Who Thrives Here

This position is a great fit for someone who:

  • Enjoys connecting with people and creating memorable guest experiences.
  • Communicates professionally and confidently with guests and teammates.
  • Stays organized and calm while balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Takes initiative and enjoys solving problems.
  • Thrives in a collaborative team where everyone contributes to the guest experience.
  • Pays attention to the details that make hospitality feel personal.
  • Enjoys learning new things and adapting as priorities change throughout the day.
  • Appreciates working in one of Montana's most beautiful outdoor settings.
What You'll Bring Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience in hospitality, customer service, tourism, retail, recreation, or another guest-facing role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Comfortable learning and using computer software, including reservation and property management systems.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate company vehicles in all weather and driving conditions, including snow and ice.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the season.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a hotel, resort, guest ranch, or similar hospitality environment.
  • Experience using a Property Management System (PMS).
  • Familiarity with the Big Sky area and surrounding attractions.
  • Concierge or guest services experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely operate company vehicles in all weather and driving conditions, including snow and ice.
  • Bend, reach, climb stairs, and perform the physical demands associated with guest service operations.
Why Join Lone Mountain Ranch?

At Lone Mountain Ranch, you'll become part of a team that believes great hospitality starts with great people. You'll work alongside teammates who care deeply about creating exceptional guest experiences while supporting one another every step of the way.

Whether you're beginning a career in hospitality or building on previous experience, you'll have opportunities to learn, grow, and develop valuable skills in one of Montana's most iconic destinations. If you enjoy working with people, thrive in a collaborative environment, and take pride in delivering genuine hospitality, we'd love to welcome you to the team.
