SummaryThe Welding Lab Assistant supports the daily operation of the welding lab by maintaining tools, equipment, and materials; ensuring compliance with safety protocols; and assisting instructors and students with lab readiness. This is a non-instructional position focused on supporting the learning environment and operational efficiency of the welding program.
Essential Duties or ResponsibilitiesThe essential duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Other duties may be assigned.
- Lab Setup and Maintenance
- Prepare welding booths, equipment, and materials for scheduled classes and activities
- Clean and organize workspaces, tools, and storage areas according to program and safety standards
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of welding equipment, including torches, grinders, and ventilation systems
- Monitor consumable supplies and notify appropriate staff when inventory needs replenishment
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials
- Safety and Compliance
- Enforce and model safe practices in the lab area
- Conduct routine checks of equipment and workspaces to identify and report safety hazards
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, college policies, and program-specific safety standards
- Student and Faculty Support
- Assist instructors with lab preparation and cleanup
- Provide general guidance to students on safe tool handling (non-instructional)
- Maintain records related to lab usage, inventory, and safety checks as assigned
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent
- A combination of education, training, and experience including at least 2,000 verifiable hours of hands-on welding experience
- Experience with welding processes and equipment (e.g., MIG, TIG, stick, oxy-fuel)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a workshop setting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of welding tools, equipment, and safety procedures
- Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of welding equipment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work environment
- Clear and professional communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
