Job description

Transmission Line Designer

The Transmission Line Designer supports the transmission department by producing accurate and detailed construction drawings for medium to high-voltage transmission line projects. Working under the guidance of senior designers and engineers, this role focuses on drafting, updating, and refining technical drawings and layouts using industry-standard CAD tools. The designer contributes directly to critical power delivery projects by transforming engineering concepts and field updates into clear, buildable design documents.

Responsibilities

  • Update plan and profile sheets and TGIS when transmission lines have been modified or updated in the field to ensure all documentation remains current and accurate.
  • Use MicroStation and ArcGIS on a daily basis to create, edit, and refine high-quality transmission line design drawings.
  • Assist Transmission Line Engineers in preparing complete sheet sets for new transmission line projects, ensuring all required views and details are included.
  • Draft and detail drawings for medium to high-voltage electrical transmission lines with the support and guidance of higher-level graphics technicians and designers.
  • Create detailed transmission drawings such as transmission line plans and profiles, transmission structure analysis and detailed design drawings, transmission structure foundation plans, and transmission structure anchor details under the direction of senior staff.
  • Perform a variety of routine drafting assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including determining drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components, and refining rough sketches into finished drawings.
  • Produce complete plan sets based on verbal or written descriptions from designers and engineers, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with standards.
  • Apply basic formulas, engineering principles, and drafting practices to support the development of safe and reliable transmission line designs.

Essential Skills

  • Two to five years of experience drafting physical layouts, equipment layouts, plan views, elevation views, and section views.
  • Two to five years of drafting experience using MicroStation, AutoCAD, PLS-CADD, or PLS-POLE.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation for creating and modifying transmission line drawings.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for drafting and detailing engineering designs.
  • Experience with PLS-CADD for transmission line design and analysis.
  • Ability to apply basic engineering formulas, principles, and standard drafting practices.
  • Strong attention to detail when producing and updating technical drawings and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret and translate verbal and written instructions from engineers and designers into accurate drawings.
  • Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer-aided (CAD) design, or in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting transmission line design projects in a civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering context.
  • Familiarity with civil design concepts as they relate to transmission line structures and foundations.
  • Experience working with transmission line design tools such as PLS-POLE.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with higher-level designers, graphics technicians, and engineers in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple drawing assignments and maintain consistent documentation standards.
  • Comfort working with GIS tools such as ArcGIS to support mapping and plan/profile updates.

Work Environment

This role operates in a quiet engineering office environment designed to support focused technical work. Designers typically share a cubicle with another designer, often a more senior team member, which encourages mentorship and collaboration. Teamwork is highly encouraged and occurs frequently as designers, technicians, and engineers work together on complex transmission line projects. The dress code is business casual, reflecting a professional yet comfortable workplace atmosphere. Daily work involves using computer-based design tools and software in a standard office setting.
