Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates, observes and/or acts as a resource to staff for patient related clinical problems. Participates in clinical situations such as Code 4, admissions, transfers, and clinical monitoring of unstable patients.

  • Participates, observes and/or acts as a resource to staff for patient related service problems. Collaborates with MD's to ensure optimal patient care and effective utilization of resources, and supports the staff to effectively problem solve patient service issues and unit issues. Acts as a patient advocate by responding and intervening in patient and visitor concerns.

  • Initiates investigation of patient incidents and medication errors, ensures proper documentation and a corrective action plan is in place.

  • Participates, observes and acts as a resource for staff regarding patient related systems problems. Acts as a liaison for staff to ensure processes are in place for patients to receive an optimal level of patient care. Collaborates with nurse managers, department managers, medical staff and hospital administration to facilitate the provision of quality care.

  • Identify trends in system problems and notifies the manager of the unit of the issue.

  • Assists with patient admission, transfer and discharge to facilitate timely process throughout the system. Obtains patient report from sending area (Emergency Services, Admitting, Surgery, Nursing Inpatient Units, other healthcare facilities, etc.) and evaluates patient status. Transfers patients and/or reassigns staff to accommodate admissions if need is identified by the unit. Completes database, processes initial key MD orders, and begins admission process as needed.

  • Responds to internal and external public relations issues, maintaining guest relations rapport with staff, public and media, which includes alerting public relations and site administrators of potential patient/hospital situations, directing media to public relations as appropriate and fielding outside telephone inquires, complaints and problems with proper referral.

  • Ensures compliance with standards and requirements of regulatory agencies.

  • Serves as individual to intervene during the absence of the Safety Officer and/or Patient Safety Officer whenever conditions immediately threaten life or health or threaten damage to equipment or buildings. Intervention authority is designated by the governing board.

  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in clinical nursing with demonstrated clinical expertise.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent problem solving, decision-making and listening skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with and establish/build relationships with others.

  • Proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift.

  • Must have functional sight and hearing.

  • Must be able to:

  • lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.

  • lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.

  • carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.

  • Must be able to:

  • - push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.

  • - perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.

  • Will be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.

  • Will be exposed to the following hazards: mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids; therefore, protective clothing and equipment must be worn as necessary.

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
