What is a Weekend SQL Database Administrator?

Weekend SQL Database Administrators are IT professionals who specialize in managing and maintaining SQL databases specifically during weekends. Their responsibilities may include monitoring database performance, performing backups, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the security and availability of data. They are often employed by organizations that require 24/7 database support or have critical systems running continuously. Weekend SQL DBAs help ensure business continuity by addressing issues that arise outside of regular business hours. This role may be filled by full-time staff on rotating schedules or by dedicated part-time personnel.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of a Weekend SQL Database Administrator?

As a Weekend SQL Database Administrator, your primary duties include monitoring database performance, performing routine maintenance, managing backups and restores, and responding to urgent incidents that arise outside of regular business hours. One of the main challenges is troubleshooting critical issues with limited immediate support from other teams, requiring you to be resourceful and self-reliant. You may also need to coordinate with colleagues on handoff procedures to ensure smooth transitions between weekday and weekend coverage. This role is ideal for professionals who excel at independent problem-solving and are comfortable making decisions under pressure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend SQL Database Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend SQL Database Administrator, you need strong expertise in SQL Server administration, backup and recovery procedures, database performance tuning, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Proficiency with tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), monitoring solutions, and a solid understanding of Windows Server environments are essential, and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing critical incidents and collaborating remotely during off-hours. These skills and qualities ensure database reliability, security, and high availability during weekend operations when immediate support resources may be limited.

Job description

Samsung SDS America is the North American technology and digital transformation arm of Samsung SDS, a global leader in IT services, cloud, artificial intelligence, enterprise platforms, cybersecurity, and logistics solutions. We partner closely with Samsung's industry-leading businesses-including Samsung Electronics, Samsung Semiconductor, Samsung Display, and Samsung Research-to design, implement, and support innovative technology solutions that accelerate business performance.
In addition to supporting Samsung affiliates, Samsung SDS America works with enterprise customers across a wide range of industries, helping organizations modernize their technology ecosystems through cloud transformation, data management, cybersecurity, AI, enterprise applications, and digital innovation. Our teams combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative, customer-focused approach to deliver secure, scalable, and business-critical solutions.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to manage, optimize, and secure enterprise database environments while maintaining the highest standards for performance, availability, and data integrity. This role places a strong emphasis on protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) through encryption, access controls, and other data protection technologies.
The ideal candidate will possess both traditional database administration expertise and a strong understanding of database security, ensuring enterprise databases remain highly available, compliant, and protected against evolving security risks.
Responsibilities
Database Administration
  • Install, configure, administer, and maintain enterprise relational database platforms, including MS SQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle.
  • Monitor database performance and system health, proactively tuning queries, indexes, and storage to maximize efficiency.
  • Manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
  • Maintain highly available database environments through replication, clustering, and failover technologies.
  • Perform capacity planning, database upgrades, patch management, and lifecycle maintenance activities.
  • Troubleshoot complex database issues while partnering with application development teams on schema design, query optimization, and overall database performance improvements.

Database Security & PII Encryption
  • Design, implement, and maintain encryption solutions for databases containing Personally Identifiable Information (PII), ensuring data is protected both at rest and in transit.
  • Administer encryption keys and integrate databases with enterprise Key Management Systems (KMS) and Hardware Security Modules (HSM).
  • Implement appropriate encryption methodologies, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), column-level encryption, and tablespace encryption.
  • Establish and enforce data masking, tokenization, and role-based access controls for sensitive information.
  • Collaborate with Information Security and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to applicable regulatory frameworks, including GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and CCPA.
  • Conduct routine audits of database access, security configurations, and encryption controls to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Support security investigations and incident response activities involving database security or potential data exposure.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Database Administrator or in a closely related role.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering one or more enterprise relational database platforms, including SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing database encryption technologies such as Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), column-level encryption, or equivalent solutions.
  • Experience working with enterprise key management practices and technologies.
  • Strong understanding of database security principles, access controls, auditing, and data protection best practices.
  • Experience designing and supporting backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and high-availability database environments.
  • Solid knowledge of SQL performance tuning and database optimization techniques.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience administering cloud-hosted database platforms such as AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, or Google Cloud SQL.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and privacy compliance frameworks including GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, and PCI-DSS.
  • Experience developing automation scripts using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Industry certifications related to database administration or cloud database technologies (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server Certification, AWS Database Specialty).
