What is a weekend software developer?

Weekend Software Developers are professionals who work primarily on weekends to develop, test, and maintain software applications. They may work part-time, on contract, or as freelancers, often supporting companies that require continuous development or maintenance outside of standard business hours. These roles are ideal for individuals seeking flexible work schedules or supplemental income. Weekend Software Developers typically possess the same technical skills as full-time developers, including programming, problem-solving, and collaboration abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in relevant languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), software development experience, and often at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, popular frameworks, and agile project management tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for balancing weekend work and collaborating with remote or distributed teams. These skills ensure the developer can efficiently produce high-quality code, meet deadlines, and contribute positively to project goals even outside traditional work hours.

What are the typical expectations and communication practices for a weekend software developer working with a distributed team?

Weekend Software Developers often collaborate with teams that operate across various time zones and schedules. Clear, asynchronous communication is crucial, as you may need to provide detailed status updates, document your progress, and flag any blockers for your weekday colleagues. Many teams use tools like Slack, Jira, or Trello to facilitate handovers and ensure seamless project continuity. You can expect your responsibilities to focus on feature development, bug fixes, or code reviews, with an emphasis on self-management and proactive reporting. Building strong written communication skills will help you succeed and integrate smoothly with the broader development team.

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team supporting a large-scale Collections application. This role is ideal for a strong backend developer with expertise in Core Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, and Kafka, who enjoys modernizing complex enterprise applications and working in a collaborative Agile environment.
You will play a key role in the ongoing modernization of a mission-critical platform, helping migrate legacy technologies to modern architectures while ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance. This position is primarily backend-focused, with opportunities to collaborate closely with frontend developers working on a React-based transformation.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Core Java and Spring Boot
  • Build and support scalable microservices-based architectures
  • Develop and optimize Kafka event-driven integrations, including message filtering and processing
  • Support the modernization of a legacy application, including migration initiatives from Java Server Faces (JSF) to React
  • Work with MongoDB and cloud-native technologies to enhance application performance and scalability
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and enhance complex enterprise applications
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and product stakeholders in a Kanban delivery model
  • Contribute to quarterly release cycles and production support activities as needed
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate application modernization efforts
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with MongoDB
  • Cloud platform experience (OpenShift, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
  • Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and enhance legacy Java applications
  • Financial services, collections, or banking domain experience
  • Experience with containerized application deployment and orchestration
Team & Project
You will join a team of approximately 10 engineers supporting a large, complex Collections platform currently undergoing a multi-phase modernization effort. Phase 1 of the migration has been completed, and the team expects continued development and enhancement work over the next year. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on a highly visible enterprise application while working with modern technologies and cloud-based platforms.
Work Environment
  • Hybrid schedule: 3 days in office required
  • Monday and Tuesday mandatory onsite
  • Thursday onsite strongly encouraged
  • Location: Charlotte, NC

Ideal Candidate: A highly skilled Java engineer who combines deep backend expertise with strong communication skills, enjoys modernizing legacy systems, and thrives in a collaborative environment focused on delivering scalable enterprise solutions.
