How much do weekend private pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for weekend private pilot in the United States is $130,916.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $155,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations for a Weekend Private Pilot, and how do they differ from full-time aviation roles?

As a Weekend Private Pilot, your primary responsibilities revolve around operating flights for personal use, recreational purposes, or occasionally transporting friends or family, usually on weekends or days off from your main occupation. Unlike full-time commercial pilots, you are not required to adhere to demanding flight schedules or manage commercial passenger operations. However, you are still responsible for thorough pre-flight checks, staying current with regulations, maintaining your currency and proficiency, and ensuring all safety protocols are met. You may also need to coordinate with flight schools, aircraft owners, or flying clubs, and participate in ongoing training to keep your skills sharp.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Private Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Private Pilot, you need a solid understanding of aerodynamics, navigation, and aviation regulations, along with a Private Pilot License (PPL) from the FAA or relevant authority. Familiarity with flight planning tools, GPS navigation systems, and aircraft maintenance basics is essential. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making, and communication skills help pilots manage unexpected situations and interact effectively with air traffic control. These skills and qualifications are critical to ensure safe, efficient, and enjoyable flying experiences during recreational flights.

What is the difference between Weekend Private Pilot vs Part-Time Commercial Pilot?

AspectWeekend Private PilotPart-Time Commercial Pilot
CertificationsPrivate Pilot CertificateCommercial Pilot Certificate
Work EnvironmentPrivate flights, recreational flying on weekendsCommercial flights, charter, or training flights part-time
Employer & IndustryPrivate owners, flight schools, recreational flyingCharter companies, flight schools, corporate clients

Weekend Private Pilots typically hold a private pilot license and fly for personal or recreational purposes on weekends. In contrast, Part-Time Commercial Pilots have a commercial license and may operate flights for hire or compensation, often working part-time in charter or training roles. The main difference lies in their certifications and the purpose of their flying activities.

What are Weekend Private Pilots?

Weekend Private Pilots are individuals who hold a private pilot license and typically fly small aircraft during weekends or their free time, rather than as a full-time profession. These pilots often fly for recreation, personal travel, or to keep their flying skills sharp. They are required to meet the same licensing standards as any private pilot, including passing written exams, flight training, and medical evaluations. Weekend Private Pilots may rent aircraft from flying clubs or own their own planes. Their flying activities are governed by regulations set by aviation authorities, such as the FAA in the United States.

Job description

Job Title: Aircraft Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a variety of general aviation aircraft, private jets, and some turboprop aircraft in a busy flight school and service environment. You will ensure aircraft remain safe, airworthy, and compliant with all applicable FAA and Part 145 regulations while supporting a growing operation that has recently added Cirrus service capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on general aviation aircraft, private jets, and turboprop aircraft in accordance with approved maintenance manuals and procedures.
  • Conduct routine inspections, including phase inspections and hourly inspections, to ensure continued airworthiness and regulatory compliance.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct discrepancies reported by pilots, including addressing pilot-reported squawks in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Document all maintenance, inspections, and repairs clearly and accurately in accordance with FAA and Part 145 regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of, and adherence to, all FAA regulations and Part 145 certification requirements during all maintenance activities.
  • Use appropriate tools, equipment, and technical data to diagnose issues and complete maintenance tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with other technicians and team members to coordinate work, share technical knowledge, and support a high-volume flight school and service operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area within the hangar, following all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Support occasional weekend work when needed to meet operational demands or critical maintenance schedules.
  • Assist with maintenance and support activities as the organization expands operations into additional hangar facilities.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on aircraft maintenance experience working on general aviation aircraft, private jets, or turboprop aircraft.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, phase inspections, and hourly inspections in accordance with regulatory and manufacturer requirements.
  • Experience correcting discrepancies and resolving pilot-reported squawks with strong attention to detail and safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FAA regulations and Part 145 certification requirements and the ability to apply them in daily maintenance activities.
  • Background as an aircraft mechanic or technician, including experience in aircraft maintenance and A&P-related work.
  • If no A&P certification, specific aircraft experience or at least 3โ€“4 years of relevant military aviation maintenance experience.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical manuals, maintenance documentation, and regulatory guidance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose mechanical and systems issues efficiently.
  • Capability to work full-time on a first-shift schedule and occasionally support weekend work when required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Background or equivalent experience in aircraft maintenance.
  • Experience working in a Part 145 repair station or similar regulated maintenance environment.
  • Familiarity with Cirrus aircraft or other modern general aviation platforms.
  • Prior experience in a busy flight school or high-volume general aviation maintenance setting.
  • Comfort working across different aircraft types, including general aviation, private jets, and turboprops.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with pilots, maintenance leads, and other technicians.
  • Ability to adapt to a growing organization and support expansion into additional hangar facilities.

Why Work Here?

Employees benefit from a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package that supports both their professional and personal well-being. Full-time team members may be eligible for industry-competitive compensation, medical, dental, and vision healthcare benefits, and access to a healthcare spending account (HSA). The organization also offers retirement options such as Simple IRA or 401(k), along with paid time off to support work-life balance. You will join a busy, growing operation with modern facilities, where your skills are valued and there are opportunities to advance into higher-paying lead roles as you develop and demonstrate your expertise.

Work Environment

You will work primarily in a hangar environment that is described as very clean and recently remodeled, giving it a like-new appearance. The hangar can get colder during the winter months, so appropriate attire for cooler conditions may be necessary. The operation is busy, with a high volume of general aviation and flight school activity, and is expanding into additional clean hangar facilities. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, first shift, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional weekend work required from time to time, though this is not frequent.
