Job description:

Pete Pappas & Sons, Inc. is a fourth generation owned and operated re-packer and wholesaler of fresh fruits and vegetables, specializing in tomatoes and strawberries. POSITION OVERVIEW:

Responsible for managing of the Operations Department which includes personnel in the Receiving and Shipping Departments and Inventory Control. Coordinate with all departments (Shipping, Receiving, Production, Purchasing, QA, and Sales) to execute an effective operation.

WORK HOURS:

Non-traditional business hours including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and on-call.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversee all of operations and support staff within the warehouse, transportation and inventory control departments.

2. Coach, develop and mentor staff through effective use of continuous feedback and communication.

3. Set Operational goals and objectives that are aligned with the company’s strategic sales plan.

4. Establish KPIs for the Operations Department and ensure the team executes based on established operational goals.

5. Partner with Leadership Team and Sales staff to drive initiatives, objectives and action plans.

6. Monitor progress of goals and action plans. Provide regular reporting of results to Leadership Team.

7. Provide daily direction to support group managers.

8. Ensure that all direct reports are properly trained in their necessary duties and suggest training to improve required job skills.

9. Develop standardized training program for new hires within the department.

10. Evaluate and recommend improvement within the department to enhance efficiencies.

11. Responsible for hiring new employees, training, disciplinary procedures, performance reviews, and recommendations for pay increases.

12. Ensure that all Warehouse, Transportation and Inventory Control SOPs are followed and developed as necessary.

13. Review weekly warehouse and transportation schedules for adequate staffing levels.

14. Work closely with Sales Team to service customers at the highest level.

15. Participate in daily Sales and Operations meetings and provide update on the department.

16. Review inventory reports daily to ensure that product is stored correctly to follow FIFO, cycle counts are completed and inventory reconciled.

17. Recommend capital expenditures for acquisition of new equipment to increase efficiency and services within the operations department.

18. Promote safety throughout operations. Ensure that accident procedures are followed and corrective actions are taken.

19. Follow all company policy and procedures which include compliance to food safety and HACCP program requirements.

20. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

1. Bachelor’s degree or comparable combination of education and work experience.

2. Minimum of 5 years distribution management experience.

3. Effective communication and customer service skills.

4. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and consistently meeting tight timelines.

5. Ability to manage the pressure associated with deadline-oriented atmosphere and customer service issues. Demonstrates skill in making independent decisions in support of company policies and procedures in a timely manner.

6. Must be proficient with computer and appropriate software.

7. Ability to solve practical and analytical problems.

8. Experience in the use of material handling equipment (forklift, electric pallet jack) required.

9. Minimum of 3 years fresh fruit and vegetable experience preferred.

10. Knowledge of USDA fresh fruit and vegetable grading standards preferred.

11. Knowledge of DOT regulations preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. The employee will occasionally work in warehouse where the temperatures range from 33 – 55 degrees.
