Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer information

What does a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer do?

A Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting software systems that support manufacturing operations, specifically during weekend shifts. They ensure that production lines run smoothly by addressing any software issues, implementing updates, and optimizing automation processes. This role often requires close collaboration with production teams and maintenance staff to quickly resolve technical problems and minimize downtime during weekend operations.

What are the unique challenges faced by Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineers, and how does the weekend shift impact collaboration and project workflow?

Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineers often work with reduced on-site staff and may need to troubleshoot urgent software or automation issues independently, which can be both challenging and rewarding. Collaboration with weekday teams typically involves thorough documentation and regular handoffs to ensure continuity across shifts. Communication skills and adaptability are essential, as you'll frequently coordinate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams remotely or asynchronously. This role offers exposure to fast-paced problem solving and can provide a pathway to leadership or weekday positions as you demonstrate reliability and initiative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C++, Python, or Java), knowledge of manufacturing processes, and a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Familiarity with industrial automation systems, PLCs, SCADA software, and version control tools like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams during off-hours. These competencies ensure smooth and efficient manufacturing operations, minimize downtime, and support rapid troubleshooting in a 24/7 production environment.

Job description

About Prime Robotics: Prime Robotics is a fast-growing warehouse automation company building integrated robotics, software, and systems that improve productivity for enterprise customers. We operate in a high-ownership, execution-focused environment where accountability, professionalism, fairness, and cultural alignment matter.

You in the Role and on the Team: As a Senior Software Engineer at Prime Robotics, you'll own meaningful pieces of our next-generation robotic control systems end-to-end โ€” from design through production. We're looking for an engineer who takes ownership of difficult problems, drives them through to completion without close supervision, and has the technical depth to unblock work others cannot. You'll use your expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and distributed system design to build scalable APIs, resolve longstanding technical challenges, and raise the technical bar of the team around you.

Employee Value Proposition (EVP): This is not just another developer role; it's an opportunity to significantly impact the future of robotics technology. You'll work on challenging projects that merge software with physical hardware, creating innovative solutions that redefine automation in the logistics and manufacturing industries. At Prime Robotics, you'll grow professionally while contributing to groundbreaking advancements in the field.

A Day in the Life

Own Work End-to-End: You take problems from ambiguous to delivered, operating independently once direction is set. When work stalls or sits between teams, you take responsibility for moving it forward. You communicate status, risks, and tradeoffs proactively, so leadership has clear visibility into progress at all times.

Solve the Hard Problems: Within your first 90 days, take on the team's most difficult open technical problems โ€” the ones requiring significant depth and persistence to resolve. You diagnose root causes rather than symptoms, design durable fixes, and document them so the team can avoid recurring issues. You also act as second-level support for customer escalations where engineering depth is required.

Develop Robust, Scalable APIs: Lead the design and implementation of scalable and efficient APIs to support Prime Robotics' next-generation control system for robotic operations. Within the first 60 days, assess current API architecture and propose enhancements to increase system responsiveness and reliability. Deliver high-quality code that meets stringent performance benchmarks and security standards.

Optimize Robotic System Performance: Over the next 6 months, lead efforts to assess and implement software optimizations that enhance the performance of robotic systems. Develop algorithms that improve processing speed and reduce error rates. Document the process improvements and present findings to the team during monthly innovation meetings.

Collaborate and Lead Cross-Functional Teams: Engage with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, system architects, and product managers to ensure the seamless integration of software components. Regularly participate in meetings across time zones with international colleagues to synchronize project efforts and maintain momentum. Track project milestones and report on the status to senior management bi-weekly.

Mentor and Raise the Bar: By the end of the first quarter, establish a mentorship cadence for junior developers focused on ownership habits, system design, and engineering rigor โ€” not just syntax. Conduct code reviews that push for clarity, correctness, and long-term maintainability.

Stay at the Forefront of Technology: Provide strategic guidance and thought leadership on emerging trends in robotics software and industry best practices. Within the first year, identify and advocate for the adoption of at least two new technologies that can enhance our software stack, positioning Prime Robotics as an industry leader in automation solutions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, preferably 7+ years
  • Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and system design โ€” able to design, debug, and operate scalable APIs in production
  • A track record of owning projects end-to-end โ€” examples where you took something ambiguous, drove it through delivery, and were accountable for the outcome (not just the code)
  • Demonstrated ability to unblock yourself and others on difficult technical problems โ€” comfortable making progress under ambiguity and incomplete requirements
  • Strong written communication โ€” you proactively surface status, risks, and decisions to stakeholders
  • Experience mentoring more junior developers
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or similar preferred
  • Experience in the robotics or similar field preferred
  • 25% travel required

Please note that this role will be based on-site, full-time at our HQ in Lakewood, CO and/ or at Robotics Lab in Denver, CO.

Benefits

  • Base salary range: $140,000-$180,000, depending on factors such as the candidateโ€™s experience, education, training, key or critical skills, and current market and business conditions.
  • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance plans to support your health and wellbeing.
  • Dedicated vacation and sick leave that allows you to recharge and take care of yourself when needed.
  • Access to a well-equipped on-site gym supporting health, fitness, and work-life sustainability.
  • Invaluable hands-on experience with cutting-edge robotics technology that keeps your skills at the industry forefront.
  • A collaborative culture where innovation thrives and your work has a real impact.
  • The excitement of contributing to transformative technology in a fast-growing industry.
