Labview Development information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, you need strong expertise in graphical programming, experience with test automation, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, DAQ hardware, and certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure efficient system development, reliable test automation, and smooth team collaboration in high-tech environments.

What are some common challenges faced by LabVIEW Developers and how can they be addressed?

LabVIEW Developers often face challenges such as integrating LabVIEW with legacy hardware, managing large and complex codebases, and ensuring efficient collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, developers should maintain clear documentation, utilize LabVIEW's modular programming features, and follow best practices for version control. Regular code reviews and open communication with hardware engineers and project managers also help streamline development and troubleshoot issues quickly.

What is LabVIEW development?

LabVIEW development refers to the process of designing, creating, and maintaining applications using LabVIEW, which is a graphical programming environment developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation. Developers use LabVIEW's visual interface to create programs, or 'virtual instruments,' by connecting functional blocks instead of writing traditional code. This approach is especially popular in engineering, scientific research, and manufacturing settings where rapid prototyping and hardware integration are essential.

What is the difference between Labview Development vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectLabview DevelopmentTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with LabVIEW certification often preferred.Requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in testing tools are common.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily lab and development settings, working on hardware integration and data acquisition.Mostly office and lab environments, focusing on designing and executing automated tests.
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, and research for data acquisition and control systems.Common in electronics, automotive, and software industries for quality assurance and testing.

While both roles involve testing and data analysis, Labview Development focuses on creating software for hardware control and data acquisition, whereas Test Automation Engineers design and implement automated testing processes to ensure product quality.

Job description

Description

Agile Space Industries is a rapidly growing supplier of propulsion hardware and engineering services for the space industry. Headquartered in Durango, Colorado, with expanding operations in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Agile has achieved more than 40% year-over-year growth for the past three years, and our momentum continues to accelerate.

At Agile, we design, build, and test in-space propulsion systems that give spacecraft the ability to maneuver with precision, reliability, and purpose. Our technologies play a critical role in missions that range from lunar landings and resource utilization to national defense, human exploration, and commercial space transport.

We are seeking bold and driven individuals who thrive in a hands-on, fast-moving environment and want to help write the next chapter of space history as part of a close-knit, innovative team.

Agile is seeking a highly experienced Data Acquisition and Controls Systems (DACS) Engineer to drive the technical direction and architecture of our DACS team in support of hypergolic propulsion systems testing. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and technical mentor who will design robust system architectures, guide program teams, and coach fellow engineers. You will balance high-level technical decision-making and project planning with hands-on development, ensuring safety, long-term reliability, and pragmatic execution.

This position is onsite in Durango, CO.

Responsibilities

  •   Lead the architectural design, strategic planning, and development of control and measurement applications used in propulsion testing.
  • Mentor and coach engineering team members, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of collaboration, safety, and excellence.
  • Design, develop, integrate, and troubleshoot software in NI LabVIEW (including LabVIEW FPGA and LabVIEW Real-Time).
  • Architect and manage hardware-software interfaces for diverse sensors (e.g., pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs) and control mechanisms (e.g., solenoid valves, VFDs, throttling valves).
  • Familiarity with NI PXIe (R-Series), NI cRIO, DAQmx, and LV FPGA.
  • Establish, enforce, and ensure compliance with rigorous software development standards and best practices.
  • Oversee the integration of test/measurement instruments (power supplies, oscilloscopes) and the implementation of communication protocols (VISA, TCP/IP, serial).
  • Act as a champion for safety and long-term system reliability across all testing and development operations.

Requirements

  • Ability to work on-site at our testing facilities in Durango, CO.
  • B.S. or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering field with a strong programming background.
  • 12+ years of relevant engineering experience; 8+ years of experience with LabVIEW; 5+ years of experience with Actor Framework; 8+ years of experience designing and debugging low-voltage electrical systems.
  • Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming fundamentals and languages such as Python or C++.
  • Experience working within Linux and Windows environments.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, communicate complex ideas effectively, and manage time proactively with a detail-oriented mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) Certification.
  • Demonstrated, multi-year experience as a technical team leader or architectural lead.
  • Familiarity with NI PXIe (R-Series), NI cRIO, DAQmx, and LV FPGA.
  • Experience designing and operating safety-critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of computer networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, UDP, firewalls).
  • Experience with high-speed signal integrity practices.
  • Proficiency with modern development and tracking tools (Git, GitLab, WSL, JIRA, SSH).

This position is open across multiple levels (Senior, Senior II, and Staff Engineer). Final leveling will be determined based on the candidate's experience, skills, and overall qualifications during the interview process.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Employment Type: Exempt

Salary: The expected salary range for this role is $123,000 - $215,000 annually. Final compensation will be based on factors such as experience, skills, and internal equity, and is typically made within the midrange, rather than the upper end. The posted salary band reflects the compensation range for candidates located in Colorado, in compliance with Colorado state law.

Work Schedule: Full Time

Location: Onsite Durango, CO
