Job description

Description

Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses-including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people's behavior-to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.

We are looking for a Legal Compliance Manager to drive our technology forward and help us lead the clean energy revolution.

How you will make an impact:

We are seeking a Legal Compliance Manager to join our growing Legal team. This role will be responsible for building and operationalizing the company's legal compliance program, ensuring that regulatory, contractual, and internal legal obligations are clearly defined, tracked, and managed across the business.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building structure from the ground up, and is motivated by creating scalable processes that enable the business to manage risk effectively. This role will work cross-functionally with Security, Privacy, Product and other business teams to translate requirements into practical workflows and drive accountability across the organization.

This role will support legal compliance across a range of regulatory and operational areas, including federal and state regulations applicable to the business, privacy and data security, utility and energy market regulations, third-party/vendor compliance, and contractual obligations (e.g., SLAs, data use, audit rights, and insurance requirements).

This is a hands-on role focused on establishing visibility into legal compliance obligations and ensuring the business is equipped to meet them.

What you get to do:

Compliance Program Development & Management

  • Support the design and implementation of the company's legal compliance program framework, including risk identification and prioritization
  • Develop and manage a legal compliance obligation tracking system, including obligations derived from contracts, laws, and internal policies
  • Be the point person in Legal to translate legal and regulatory requirements into actionable business processes
  • Coordinate across teams to identify and assign ownership of legal compliance obligations and track progress, including ERM process support and legal risk inventory across regulatory, contractual, and operational domains

Monitoring, Reporting & Accountability

  • Monitor compliance status and track completion of key obligations and controls
  • Identify gaps, escalate risks, and support remediation efforts
  • Develop and deliver reporting to provide visibility into compliance posture and key risk areas
  • Support audit readiness and responses, including customer and regulatory inquiries

Cross-Functional Enablement

  • Serve as a central point of coordination across Legal, Privacy, Security, Product, and business teams for compliance-related initiatives
  • Help drive clear ownership and accountability for compliance obligations without directly owning execution
  • Support the development and rollout of policies, standards, and internal guidance

Corporate Entity Governance

  • Support maintenance of corporate governance records, including local, state and federal entity filings
  • Assist with entity management and periodic corporate compliance requirements, including subsidiary board support
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders

Compliance Administration & Legal Support

  • Maintain organized records of compliance documentation, including policies, risk assessments, and audit materials
  • Support tracking of compliance-related contractual obligations (e.g., insurance, data handling requirements, audit rights)
  • Assist with regulatory filings, certifications, and periodic compliance activities
  • Support the Legal team with contract filing, repository management, and general administrative organization of legal and compliance materials
  • Provide backup support for contract and matter management needs as needed

What you bring to Uplight:

Required

  • 4-7 years of experience in legal compliance, risk or legal operations
  • Experience in a SaaS, technology, or regulated environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build compliance processes across teams
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to translate complex legal requirements into clear, actionable workflows
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Preferred

  • Experience supporting or building legal risk frameworks
  • Familiarity with privacy/data protection or regulatory compliance concepts
  • Exposure to regulated industries (e.g., energy, utilities, fintech)
  • Leadership and management experience working across business units
  • Bachelor's degree in business, legal studies, or related field (or equivalent experience)
