Job description

The Lab Technician is responsible for ensuring that manufacturing processes and products produced meet the quality specifications that are laid out by the company.

Essential Job Duties

  • Be certified to the Lab Technician training matrix.
  • Adhere to all site-wide safety regulations and procedures.
  • Review and update lab procedures as needed with Quality Manager.
  • Review any lab procedure changes with production as needed.
  • Calibrate and maintain cleanliness of testing equipment and lab spaces.
  • Housekeeping in lab area, quality lab, and overall Lab 5S.
  • Prepare specimens and samples for testing.
  • Keep accurate records of testing results.
  • Provide analysis of lab observations.
  • Maintain and track inventory of lab testing supplies and notify Quality Manager when supplies need to be procured.
  • Finished lot molding and testing (Testing should be completed within 3 (three) days of production completion).
  • Lab request testing, as per Lab Request Form (Operations and Lines Running takes priority).
  • Confirm all lab inspection sheets are in the trays for upcoming production lots. File all completed lab paperwork.
  • Enter test data for Finished Goods COA/Transfer to unrestricted for shipping.
  • Authority to determine when a production line should be shut down due to the production of non-conforming material.
  • Daily morning review of all 2-hour MFR data from previous 12 hours, confirming that there are no issues. Reporting any issues to the Quality Manager/Plant Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring materials deemed non-conforming are placed on hold and quarantined for further investigation.
  • Responsible for notifying the Quality Manager and Plant Manager when physical properties are out of spec.
  • Plant safety walk-throughs; Assist in walking through department four times per shift with a focus on safety, process procedures, 5S/Cleanliness, and observing people behavior.
  • Attending and contributing to all production meetings.
  • Communicate with Customer Service for testing priority. (Day Shift only).
  • Attend OOR meeting daily and provide updates. (Day Shift only).
  • Communicate MFR/pellet issues with Production CO (2-hour MFR tests). (All Shifts).
  • Complete Lab Tech Checklist. (Daily at the beginning of each shift).
  • Complete WH/Lab Checklist on the weekends.
  • Coordinate/Maintain sample retention areas and lab testing paperwork.
  • Complete Quality Manager Daily Checks for all lines in absence of Quality Manager. (Day Shift only).
  • Support Warehouse and Production as required by production levels.
  • Assist production with Start-Ups and Changeovers - Hot Gear Required (Training provided)
  • Manage calibration records and due dates with Quality Manager.
  • Support Customer concerns and complaints with Quality Manager.
  • Follow process and interactions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.
  • Receiving, labeling and safely storing samples to be tested.
  • Determining and performing tests needed for the analysis and report.
  • Recording tests and analyses and then reporting the results.
  • Discussing and answering any questions regarding the results.
  • Organizing and storing samples in accordance with all safety and other requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and integrity of the sample.
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment, including recalibration of equipment.
  • Maintaining equipment records and daily work logs.
  • Staying current on technical and scientific advances in their field.

Required Skills/ Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in a lab testing environment.
  • Excellent analytical / problem solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong basic mathematical skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work under little or no supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Must possess working knowledge of color formulations and standards.
  • Must pass Ishihara test (color blind test).

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Math or Science preferred 

Physical Requirements in the working environment:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
