Key responsibilities include specimen collection and processing; operating laboratory instrumentation (hematology, chemistry, and immunology analyzers); analyzing, documenting, and reporting results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS); performing quality control, proficiency testing, and competency activities; supporting inventory management and supply ordering; assisting with procedure development; and maintaining compliance with hospital policies and CLIA ’88 requirements.

A Typical Shift

As a PRN MLT Medical Lab Technician, you’ll arrive for a rotating shift and review pending work, priorities, and any notes from the previous team. The pace varies—some hours are routine, others are driven by urgent clinical needs—so you’ll stay organized while moving between benches and the LIS. You’ll coordinate with nursing and other departments as questions arise, keep documentation clear for continuity across days/evenings/nights, and close out the shift by confirming handoff details for the next rotation. Weekend and holiday coverage is part of the schedule, with hours flexing between 8 and 24 per week depending on staffing needs.
