Weekend Kaiser Rn and Weekend Nurse Practitioner roles both serve healthcare needs during weekends within Kaiser facilities. RNs typically provide direct patient care under supervision, while Nurse Practitioners have advanced training to diagnose and treat patients independently. The main differences lie in credentials, scope of practice, and responsibilities, with NPs having more autonomy and advanced certifications.

What is a Weekend Kaiser RN?

A Weekend Kaiser RN is a registered nurse who works weekend shifts at a medical facility operated by Kaiser Permanente, a major healthcare organization in the United States. These nurses typically provide patient care, administer medications, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals, but their primary shifts are scheduled on weekends to ensure consistent care coverage. Weekend RNs may benefit from additional pay incentives or flexible work schedules. This role is ideal for nurses seeking work-life balance or those who prefer weekend work hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Kaiser RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Kaiser RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical assessment abilities, and experience in acute care or hospital settings. Familiarity with Kaiser Permanente's electronic health record systems (such as KP HealthConnect) and standard hospital equipment is important. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills are crucial for effectively handling patient loads and collaborating with weekend staff. These competencies are essential for delivering high-quality care and ensuring patient safety during weekend shifts when resources may be limited.

What are the unique challenges and rewards of working as a Weekend Kaiser RN compared to a traditional weekday schedule?

As a Weekend Kaiser RN, you'll typically work longer shifts on weekends, which can offer a more condensed workweek and allow for extended time off during weekdays. The pace may be different, with fewer ancillary staff and providers available, requiring greater autonomy and resourcefulness. You’ll often see a wider variety of cases and may need to make quick decisions due to limited immediate support. However, weekend roles often come with schedule flexibility and potential shift differentials, making it attractive for those seeking work-life balance or additional income.

Job description

Description:

Registered Nurse

$65–$70/hour | Full-Time | Petaluma, CA| Mon–Wed & Fri, 7:30am–6:00pm | Four-Day Workweek

About the Role:
Muir Wood is looking for a Registered Nurse to join our residential treatment team supporting adolescents ages 12–17 with complex mental health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. This isn't high-volume, transactional nursing—you'll carry a manageable census in a small residential setting where you actually know your clients, working alongside psychiatrists, therapists, and behavioral health staff to deliver evidence-based, trauma-informed psychiatric and medical care. Here, medical safety and therapeutic relationship go hand in hand.

Why Join Us:

  • $65–$70/hour competitive pay
  • Consistent four-day workweek
  • Full benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k) + match, PTO
  • Collaborative multidisciplinary treatment team where nursing has a real voice
  • Paid onboarding and ongoing training
  • Optional evening/weekend on-call program available (compensated separately)
  • Opportunity to build meaningful, lasting relationships with teens and families
  • Mission-driven culture focused on exceptional clinical care

What You'll Do:

  • Complete nursing assessments and admission screenings
  • Administer and monitor psychiatric and medical medications, watching for effectiveness and side effects
  • Assess, monitor, and document clients' medical status throughout treatment
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists on medication management and treatment planning
  • Coordinate medical appointments, lab testing, and specialty referrals
  • Educate clients and families on medications, health, and wellness
  • Maintain medication inventory, controlled substance records, and regulatory documentation
  • Document nursing care in the EMR
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings
  • Respond to medical emergencies while maintaining a therapeutic environment
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards, California Title 22 regulations, and Muir Wood policies
Requirements:

What We're Looking For:

Must Have:

  • Current, unrestricted California RN license
  • Current BLS/CPR certification
  • Strong clinical assessment, medication administration, and documentation skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to pass DOJ/FBI background clearance and pre-employment health screening

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of RN experience
  • Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric nursing, adolescent health, pediatrics, residential treatment, or substance use treatment
  • Experience with psychiatric medication management and EMR/EHR systems
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and adolescent development
  • Interest in Muir Wood's voluntary evening/weekend on-call nursing program - compensated separately

About Muir Wood:
Muir Wood provides evidence-based residential treatment for adolescents ages 12–17 experiencing complex mental health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. We're a Joint Commission-accredited program built on a simple belief: teens heal in relationship, not isolation. Our multidisciplinary team delivers compassionate, trauma-informed care that helps adolescents build resilience, strengthen family relationships, and create lasting change—supported by accredited academics and deep family involvement at every step.
