Role Summary
Owns database availability, performance, security, and migration readiness across a legacy IBM DB2 estate and modern cloud-managed relational databases. Keeps mission-critical data services healthy while enabling the platform's move to cloud-native data architecture.
Key Responsibilities
Administer, monitor, and tune production and non-production databases; proactive alerting, capacity planning, and preventive maintenance.
Support database migration from legacy on-premises platforms to cloud-managed services, including schema conversion, data movement, and cutover planning.
Design and review schemas, indexes, partitioning, and stored procedures; conduct query optimization and root cause analysis on performance incidents.
Maintain database security controls: access control, encryption at rest and in transit, auditing, and privileged access management.
Maintain baseline configurations, configuration management records, and system component inventories on a defined cadence.
Manage backup, recovery, replication, and high-availability configurations; test and document recovery procedures.
Remediate database-layer vulnerability and STIG findings; keep platform versions within supported release windows.
Support developers and analysts with data access patterns, test data provisioning, and migration validation.
Support DB2-to-cloud/MySQL migration planning for Drupal/PACE modernization, including schema conversion, reconciliation, performance baselines, cutover, rollback, and post-migration validation.
Maintain database configuration and component inventories in accordance with DOL configuration-management requirements at the required cadence.
Support monitoring, alerting, RCA, vulnerability remediation, supported-version currency, and release/change evidence for database changes.
Required Skills & Experience
7+ years as a DBA supporting production enterprise systems.
Hands-on IBM DB2 administration (v10.x or later) strongly preferred; equivalent Oracle/SQL Server depth with DB2 cross-training will be considered.
Cloud-managed database experience - AWS Aurora/RDS (PostgreSQL or MySQL) preferred.
Advanced SQL, stored procedure development, and performance tuning.
Backup/recovery, HA/DR design, and replication experience.
Database security hardening and compliance experience in a regulated environment.
Automation scripting (Python, Shell) and infrastructure-as-code familiarity.
Experience supporting database changes through CI/CD with version-controlled schema migrations.
Experience supporting DB2 and MySQL/PostgreSQL in hybrid legacy-to-cloud modernization environments.
Working knowledge of database security controls, audit logging, encryption, least privilege, records retention, and regulated PII handling.
Preferred Qualifications
Legacy-to-cloud database migration experience (DMS, SCT, or equivalent).
Federal environment experience with STIGs and formal configuration management.
Kubernetes-hosted application data patterns and connection pooling at scale.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
