What is a weekend graphic designer?

Weekend Graphic Designers are creative professionals who work primarily on weekends to design visual content for clients or employers. Their responsibilities include creating graphics for digital and print media, such as social media posts, advertisements, logos, and marketing materials. They may work remotely or on-site, often collaborating with marketing teams or clients to meet tight deadlines and accommodate weekend project needs. Weekend Graphic Designers are valued for their flexibility and ability to handle urgent or last-minute design requests outside the traditional workweek.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a weekend graphic designer?

To thrive as a Weekend Graphic Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and a portfolio demonstrating creative work. Familiarity with project management tools and digital asset management systems is often required, along with knowledge of web design basics. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for meeting tight weekend deadlines and collaborating remotely. These abilities ensure that high-quality designs are delivered efficiently, even within condensed timelines and variable schedules.

Can a weekend graphic designer work part-time?

Yes, a weekend graphic designer can work part-time, often taking on projects or clients outside regular weekday hours. Many part-time roles in graphic design are flexible, allowing designers to set their own schedules based on project deadlines and workload. This arrangement is common for freelance or contract positions that require specific weekend availability.

How does working as a weekend graphic designer differ from a standard full-time graphic design role?

Weekend Graphic Designers often focus on high-priority or time-sensitive projects that arise outside regular business hours, such as social media campaigns, event materials, or urgent client requests. The role usually requires strong time management skills and the ability to work independently, as team collaboration may be limited during weekends. However, you may still interact with project managers or clients remotely to clarify requirements and deliver updates. This position can provide valuable experience handling fast-paced assignments and can serve as a stepping stone toward full-time opportunities or specialized freelance work.

Heritage Christian Academy is a Preschool-12th grade Christian school in southern Johnson County, KS committed to partnering with families to equip students to know Christ, pursue excellence, and impact the world for God's glory.

The HCA Communications Department exists to support HCA's mission by providing clear, timely, and Christ-centered communication. Through storytelling, photography, design, social media, and family communications, we seek to communicate with truth, grace, gratitude, and confidence in God's work among us while strengthening the connection between HCA and the families we serve. We accomplish this by partnering with school leaders, faculty, coaches, and department heads to support the various programs and help share the stories that make our community unique.

Reports To: Communications Director

Schedule: Approximately 20-25 hours per week, 10a-2p M-F, with school breaks off. Most hours will be worked on campus, but occasional remote work may be permitted. Candidates should expect the exercise to require approximately 20-30 minutes.

Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator supports Heritage Christian Academy's communications efforts through social media management, photography, graphic design, and internal communications. This position is responsible for helping tell the story of HCA by capturing school life, creating engaging content, and supporting consistent communication with current and prospective families.

The ideal candidate is creative, organized, dependable, and excited to use their gifts to advance the mission of Christian education.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Social Media Management - 40%

  • Manage and maintain HCA's primary social media accounts, including school and athletics platforms.
  • Create, schedule, and publish content that highlights student life, academics, athletics, fine arts, events, and community engagement.

2. Internal Communications - 25%

  • Assist in the creation and distribution of weekly school newsletters and family communications.
  • Gather information from departments, coaches, and school leaders for publication.
  • Proofread and format communication materials to ensure clarity and consistency.

  • Identify and collect stories, testimonials, and highlights from across the HCA community.
  • Maintain organized photo and video archives for future marketing and communication use.

4. Graphic Design - 10%

  • Create flyers, event promotions, social media graphics, and other communication materials using Canva.
  • Support admissions, athletics, development, and school programs with visual content.
  • Ensure materials align with HCA branding standards.

5. Additional Support - 5%

  • Provide communications support for major school initiatives and events.
  • Perform other communications-related duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency with Canva and basic graphic design principles.
  • Photography experience and an eye for visual storytelling.
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and content creation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Experience in education, nonprofit, ministry, athletics, or communications environments preferred.
