Job description

Outer West Community Church (OWCC) | San Antonio, TX
Full-time (40 hrs/week) | Sunday–Thursday
Reports to: Executive Pastor
Leads: Volunteer team leads + volunteer teams
Church size: ~1,200 weekend attendanc

The role

Outer West Kids is where kids (birth–5th grade) begin a lifelong journey of following Jesus—and where parents decide if a church feels safe, clear, and worth building their family around.

We’re hiring a Kids Director who can build great environments, develop volunteer leaders, and create simple systems that help families feel connected and cared for.

If you love Jesus, love kids, and love building teams, you’ll thrive here.

What you’ll own

Sundays + weekly ministry

  • Lead engaging, safe, excellent kids environments for birth–5th grade
  • Set team leads and volunteers up to win (clear plans, prep, training, support)
  • Choose/adapt curriculum and improve how it lands week to week
  • Ensure compliance with child safety and protection policies

Volunteer culture (your biggest win)

  • Recruit, train, and coach volunteers and team leads
  • Build a leadership pipeline so ministry doesn’t depend on one person
  • Create a culture where volunteers feel known, valued, and developed

Parents + family connection

  • Communicate clearly with parents (simple, consistent, helpful)
  • Provide resources that equip parents as disciple-makers
  • Lead key family initiatives (Child Dedications, Parent Workshops, Kids Camp, Parents Night Out)

Next steps + transitions

  • Improve guest follow-up, connection, and next steps for families
  • Strengthen transitions between grade levels and into Student Ministry (6th grade+)

Inclusive ministry

  • Support inclusive ministry efforts (including a Buddy Program)
  • Partner with the Special Needs Director to serve kids with additional needs

Staff leadership + budget

  • Collaborate across teams to align calendars, strategy, and resourcing
  • Build and manage the kids ministry budget (plan, track, adjust)

What we’re looking for

Required

  • 2+ years leading Kids and/or Student Ministry
  • Proven ability to recruit, lead, and develop volunteers
  • Strong communication with parents, volunteers, and staff
  • Organized, relational, steady under pressure

Preferred (not required)

  • Large church experience (750+)
  • Ministry training, certificate, or college coursework (experience can substitute)
  • Familiarity with Planning Center Online and Google tools

Tools you’ll use

Planning Center Online, Google Workspace, basic Mac tools

What success looks like (first 6–12 months)

  • Sundays feel consistent, safe, and high-quality across all kids spaces
  • Volunteer teams are staffed, trained, and supported—less scrambling
  • Parents feel informed and cared for
  • Clear transitions from kids to students

What it’s like to work here

Outer West is a team-first church. We move fast, communicate directly, and build healthy systems—because people matter more than last-minute chaos. We work hard, we laugh a lot, and we protect what keeps leaders healthy.

Staff expectations

  • Active relationship with Jesus and a life consistent with Christian leadership
  • Alignment with OWCC’s mission, vision, values, and staff culture
  • Commitment to teamwork, humility, and serving the church
