This position is responsible for operating trains that carry freight. Operating automated systems that propel trains, add or remove cars, or switch cars around to unload freight.

Responsibilities
  • Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
  • Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches.
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
  • Operate locomotive equipment
  • Properly line switches for railcar movement
  • Operate railcar equipment such as air hoses and handbrakes
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc)
  • Must have the ability to communicate clearly, listen and understand information through spoken words and sentences to ensure full comprehension of job duties, safety regulations, and other situations that may require an immediate response
  • Will require night, weekend, holiday, and/or overtime work based on the job site's operation schedule
  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or upper management
Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license required
  • At least two years of verifiable mechanical experience
  • General knowledge of construction site and equipment
  • Experience operating heavy equipment
  • Previous work-related skill, knowledge and/or experience preferred
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in ash management, structural fills and landfills preferred
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Work Environment & Conditions
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule: nights, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime
  • Must be able to climb, maintain body equilibrium, reach, grasp, bend and walk/stand/sit for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to display eye to hand coordination; depth perception required.
  • Must be able to manipulate small parts with hands.
  • Must be able to hear and see naturally or with correction
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
