Board-Certified Radiation Oncology Physician

Position Type: Part-Time to Full-Time Estimated Hours: Approximately 1,560–2,080 hours annually Work Arrangement: On-site

Baltimore VA Medical Center Radiation Oncology Service 10 North Greene Street Baltimore, MD 21201

Position Summary

Seeking experienced, board-certified Radiation Oncology Physicians to provide on-site care for adult cancer patients. The physician will perform consultations, develop treatment plans, oversee radiation therapy, monitor patient progress, complete follow-up evaluations, and participate in peer review and quality-improvement activities.

The successful candidate must be experienced with advanced radiation-treatment technologies and capable of working collaboratively with physicians, physicists, radiation therapists, nurses, and other clinical personnel.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and treat inpatient and outpatient cancer patients receiving curative or palliative radiation therapy.
  • Conduct consultations, medical histories, physical examinations, and reviews of imaging, laboratory findings, and medical records.
  • Develop individualized radiation-treatment plans and explain treatment goals, risks, expected outcomes, dose, and duration to patients.
  • Obtain and document informed patient consent before treatment.
  • Provide conventional and advanced treatments, including 2D/3D conformal therapy, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, SRS, SRT, and SBRT.
  • Support CT simulation, treatment planning, image review, and treatment-plan verification.
  • Review consults and upcoming patient cases for a minimum of two hours daily.
  • Perform weekly treatment-management examinations and evaluate each patient at least once every five treatments.
  • Monitor treatment response, side effects, complications, laboratory results, and imaging findings.
  • Modify radiation dose or treatment plans when clinically appropriate.
  • Complete end-of-treatment documentation and discharge instructions.
  • Conduct follow-up examinations within 30–60 days after completion of treatment.
  • Communicate test results to patients and referring providers within required timeframes.
  • Complete and electronically sign all patient-care documentation in CPRS.
  • Participate in weekly tumor boards, chart rounds, peer-review conferences, and quality-improvement meetings.
  • Support patient safety, radiation safety, infection control, and incident-reporting requirements.
  • Provide scheduled evening, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage.
  • Maintain professional and respectful relationships with patients and clinical personnel.
Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.
  • Completion of an accredited Radiation Oncology residency.
  • Current American Board of Radiology certification in Radiation Oncology.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Minimum of five years of documented post-residency Radiation Oncology experience.
  • At least three years of continuous relevant work experience during the previous five years.
  • Minimum five years of experience performing consultations, CT simulations, treatment planning, treatment management, and follow-up care.
  • Minimum five years of experience with Varian Edge linear accelerators or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years of experience with IGRT and Cone Beam CT.
  • Minimum five years of experience with Eclipse treatment planning and ARIA record-and-verify systems.
  • Minimum three years of experience with Siemens SOMATOM go.Open Pro CT simulator or equivalent.
  • Current National Provider Identifier.
  • Current DEA registration suitable for practice in Maryland.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
  • Ability to obtain clinical privileges, complete required background screening, and receive a PIV identification card.
Preferred Qualification
  • At least three years of experience using the VA CPRS electronic medical record system.
Health and Credentialing Requirements

Selected physicians must provide documentation of:

  • Current medical license, board certification, NPI, DEA registration, ACLS, BLS, and continuing medical education.
  • Tuberculosis screening completed within the required timeframe.
  • Immunity or vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and Tdap.
  • Annual influenza vaccination or an approved medical exemption.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination and required testing.
  • Bloodborne-pathogen training.
  • Completion of required privacy, cybersecurity, ethics, patient-safety, infection-control, and workplace-safety training.
  • Successful credentialing and privileging before providing patient care.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must not be excluded from participation in federal healthcare programs.
  • Must be reliable and able to maintain scheduled clinical and on-call coverage.
  • Must notify management immediately of any licensing, credentialing, scheduling, or availability issue.
  • Must comply with all applicable patient privacy, medical-record, radiation-safety, and professional-practice standards.
