The Archdiocese of St. Louis strives to teach and share our faith, serve others, and foster unity throughout the St. Louis area. Once a part of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary's campus, the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury, MO is today the headquarters and curia (governing body) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Job Summary
The Musician supports the liturgical life of St Joseph Catholic Church, Apple Creek by providing high-quality instrumental accompaniment for weekend Masses, Holy Days, sacramental celebrations, and other parish liturgies or events. This role enhances the prayerful atmosphere of worship through musical excellence, collaboration, and adherence to the liturgical norms of the Catholic Church.
Job Responsibilities
Liturgical & Musical Support
  • Provide instrumental accompaniment for designated Masses and parish liturgies, working closely with the Ensemble Director, Cantor, or Director of Music.
  • Prepare and perform music appropriate to the liturgical season, readings, and parish music guidelines.
  • Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled rehearsals and liturgies.
  • Support the assembly's participation through sensitive, prayerful playing that reflects the spirit of the Mass.

Rehearsals & Preparation
  • Attend all ensemble rehearsals and sound checks as scheduled.
  • Practice assigned music independently and ensure readiness for performance.
  • Collaborate with ensemble members to ensure cohesive, balanced musical presentation.

Communication & Coordination
  • Communicate effectively with the Director of Music, ensemble leaders, and fellow musicians about schedules, repertoire, and expectations.
  • Submit availability in a timely manner to assist with scheduling.
  • Notify ensemble leadership promptly regarding any conflicts or absences.

Other Duties
  • Participate in parish-wide liturgical celebrations (e.g., Christmas, Triduum, Confirmation) when assigned.
  • Maintain care and proper use of parish instruments or equipment when applicable.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Director of Music or Pastor.

Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated proficiency on the instrument(s) used in liturgy (e.g., piano, organ, guitar, strings, winds, percussion).
  • Experience performing in worship or ensemble settings preferred.
  • Familiarity with Catholic liturgy and sacred music is a plus.
  • Strong musical technique and sight-reading ability.
  • Ability to collaborate with singers and other instrumentalists.
  • Reliable, punctual, and prepared for all scheduled commitments.
  • Comfortable adapting to various musical styles appropriate to Catholic worship.
  • Respect for the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Professional and pastoral demeanor in a liturgical environment.
