What are Weekend AWS Cloud Engineers?

Weekend AWS Cloud Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in managing, deploying, and maintaining Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure specifically during weekends. Their responsibilities often include monitoring systems for issues, implementing updates or patches, and supporting any cloud-related incidents that arise outside of typical weekday hours. This role ensures that cloud environments remain secure, reliable, and functional during off-peak times when many organizations still require 24/7 uptime. Weekend AWS Cloud Engineers must have strong knowledge of AWS services, scripting, troubleshooting, and incident response. They may work as part of a rotating on-call team or in dedicated weekend shifts.

Can cloud engineers make 200k?

Experienced AWS Cloud Engineers can potentially earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with specialized skills, certifications, and in high-demand markets. Salaries vary based on location, experience, and the complexity of cloud environments managed.

What are the typical responsibilities and collaboration expectations for a Weekend AWS Cloud Engineer?

As a Weekend AWS Cloud Engineer, you’ll often focus on monitoring cloud infrastructure, responding to incidents, performing maintenance tasks, and supporting deployments that are scheduled outside of regular business hours. You’ll likely collaborate remotely with weekday engineering teams through documentation, ticketing systems, and occasional handover meetings to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of operations. Communication skills and the ability to work independently are especially important, as you may be the primary point of contact for any urgent issues during your shift. This role can provide valuable experience in incident management and automation, and is a strong stepping stone toward more senior cloud engineering positions.

Are AWS cloud engineers in demand?

Organizations seek professionals with skills in cloud architecture, automation, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect, making this a strong job market for qualified candidates.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior cloud engineers, including those specializing in AWS, with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership roles can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand markets. Such compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly for those working in large tech companies or consulting firms with specialized skills in cloud architecture and security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend AWS Cloud Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend AWS Cloud Engineer, you need expertise in cloud architecture, scripting, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or AWS certification (such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect). Familiarity with AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda), infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation), and monitoring platforms is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently during off-hours set top performers apart. These abilities ensure reliable cloud operations, rapid incident response, and seamless service availability during weekend shifts.

How much do AWS cloud engineers make?

AWS Cloud Engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level roles may start lower, while experienced engineers with advanced skills and certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in environments requiring cloud architecture and security expertise.

Job description

AWS Cloud Engineer, Chicago, IL

We are seeking a Chicago-based AWS Cloud Engineer to help manage the company's IT operations, security and infrastructure. In addition, the AWS Cloud Engineer is responsible for overseeing and maintaining IT-related policies, procedures, and controls aligned with HITRUST requirements and other regulatory and cybersecurity frameworks such as HIPAA, SOC, NIST, etc. Experience with HITRUST and PCI certification is helpful. Fintech or Payment Card industry experience is a plus. The company does not offer health insurance or a retirement plan, though a monthly stipend is offered that can subsidize a portion of health insurance costs. This is mainly remote, but candidates must live in the Chicago area.

This is an AWS Cloud Engineer opportunity requiring a strong blend of cloud and systems experience. The ideal AWS Cloud Engineer will bring at least 5 years of overall Systems Administration/Engineering expertise, including a minimum of 2 years working in cloud environments. Key platforms and tools that the AWS Cloud Engineer should be comfortable with will include AWS, DataDog, Intune, Sentry, and/or PostHog. On-premises infrastructure responsibility is not a major focus, owing to the overall small scale of network management and monitoring needed. For example, the company currently supports only a few dozen workstations.

AWS Cloud Engineer Responsibilities:

  • IT Infrastructure: – Manage all IT-related office technology, including but not limited to, network patching, computer devices, monitors, mobile devices, multi-function printers, and video equipment; troubleshooting hardware and software issues as they arise.
  • – Monitor agents and antivirus/antimalware for all company-owned assets including, but not limited to office 365 accounts, computer workstations, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
  • – Manage IT-hardware assets from their acquisition to their disposal, encompassing planning, procurement, deployment, maintenance, and retirement.
  • – Regularly ensure that smart office equipment is in working order, and that access instructions are visible to stakeholders.
  • – Coordinate on-boarding, training and off-boarding of all employees and contractors pertaining to assigned equipment.
  • – Maintain inventory of all IT assets.
  • – Develop and provide a technology roadmap and annual updates.
  • – Assist with hardware and software procurement.
  • – Coordinate with building personnel, as needed to manage the installation or modification work pertaining to office-based IT assets, such as the opening of walls for IT conduits or repairing drywall to accommodate new ports.
  • IT Support: – Serve as the main point of contact for office-related technology issues and IT vendor management.
  • – Provide direct support to all employees and contractors pertaining to use of assigned hardware and software.
  • – Lead response to inquiries and incidents from internal users with deployed company assets via a ticketing portal including Monday through Friday, 24-hour phone, email and ticketing portal support and weekends for high priority issues.
  • – Support the development of new office policies and procedures to improve IT asset efficiency and maintain technical standards.
  • – Act with urgency to troubleshoot and resolve IT problems when they impact business, production, or customer-facing technologies, such as a company portal.
  • – Provide general administrative support, such as greeting visitors and managing office network access, as may be needed from time to time.
  • Cloud Operations & DevOps: – Monitor data backups and perform selective restore testing.
  • – Maintain/monitor cloud infrastructure and respond to incidents and outages.
  • – Develop and regularly test Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity procedures.
  • – Ensure that cloud assets are regularly scanned for vulnerabilities and security incidents.
  • Compliance – Participate in creation of training materials regarding data security and compliance best practices, as well as facilitating training of end users regarding new and existing systems and workflows.
  • – Regularly report compliance program status, violations, and risk findings to management.
  • – Maintain and improve business systems' reliability and uptime. As needed, lead escalation communications pertaining to system outages or critical events impacting operations such as platform errors, service disruptions, or faults affecting environments.
  • – Participate in building and maintaining organizational practices and policies to ensure a safe and secure IT and data environment and to ensure audit compliance.
  • – Conduct periodic internal reviews to ensure compliance remains up to date. Assemble documentation and evidence for external audits and/or third-party assessments if necessary.
  • – Collaborate with legal, business units, and senior management to ensure compliance requirements are integrated into the company's operational processes.
  • – Research emerging compliance and cybersecurity issues. Stay informed with updates to the HITRUST framework that may require necessary adaptations to existing company policies.

AWS Cloud Engineer Qualifications:

– At least 5 years of overall Systems Administration/Engineering expertise.

– A minimum of 2 years working in cloud environments.

– Candidates should be comfortable with AWS, DataDog, Intune, Sentry, and/or PostHog (AWS is preferred).

– Hands-on experience with computer networks, network administration and network installation.

– Experience with IT Operations, Security and Infrastructure.

– Solid cybersecurity background.

– Experience in managing an IT operation within major regulatory and cybersecurity frameworks, such as HIPPA, SOC, HITRUST, NIST, etc.

– Excellent communication skills for collaboration across teams and training.

– Fintech or Payment Card industry experience is a plus.

– This is an individual contributor role; must have the ability to thrive in a smaller environment without direct reports.

– Enthusiastic and motivated outlook to proactively look for involvement in other aspects of the business when their own workload is low.

– Experience with HITRUST and PCI certification is helpful.

Benefits include competitive salary, progressive company culture, flexible work arrangements, including ability to work from home, flexible monthly stipend for support of various health-related expenses, generous paid time off (PTO), with unrestricted time off subject to manager approval, Company-sponsored social and team-building events, and career progression and personal development pathways.
