Job description

Academic Decathlon (AcDec) Coach

Reports To: Activities Director / Building Principal

Position Summary:
The Academic Decathlon (AcDec) Coach is responsible for overseeing and leading the school's Academic Decathlon program. This includes recruiting and supporting student participants, organizing practices, preparing students for competition, and fostering a culture of academic excellence, teamwork, and personal growth. The coach will ensure that all aspects of the program align with school and district expectations while providing a positive and enriching experience for students.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of the Academic Decathlon program
  • Recruit, select, and retain student participants representing a range of academic achievement levels
  • Develop and implement a structured practice schedule focused on all AcDec subject areas (e.g., math, science, literature, social science, economics, art, music, essay, speech, and interview)
  • Prepare students for local, regional, state, and/or national competitions
  • Coordinate study materials, resources, and curriculum aligned with the annual Academic Decathlon theme
  • Provide instruction, guidance, and feedback to students in both individual and team events
  • Arrange mock interviews, speeches, and testing opportunities to build student confidence and performance
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and academic integrity within the program
  • Manage program logistics including scheduling, travel arrangements, competition registration, and communication with families
  • Collaborate with school staff to support student eligibility and academic success
  • Maintain accurate records, budgets, and inventory of materials
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, administration, and relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and competition guidelines

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; teaching license required
  • Strong academic background across multiple subject areas
  • Experience working with high school students in an academic or extracurricular setting
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to motivate and support a diverse group of learners
  • Previous Academic Decathlon experience (participant or coach) preferred but not required

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to differentiate instruction for varying academic levels
  • Experience with public speaking, debate, or coaching competitive teams
  • Strong time management and program planning abilities
  • Ability to build relationships with students, staff, and community members

Time Commitment:

  • Seasonal position with practices held multiple times per week (schedule determined by coach)
  • Additional time required for competitions, preparation, and travel (including evenings and weekends)
