Is AI replacing web devs?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain tasks in web development, such as code generation and testing, but they do not fully replace web developers. Skilled developers are still needed to design, customize, and maintain websites, especially for complex projects requiring creativity and problem-solving. Proficiency in coding languages and understanding of user experience remain essential for web developers.

What does a website developer do?

A website developer designs, builds, and maintains websites using programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They may also work with content management systems, optimize site performance, and ensure security, often collaborating with designers and clients to meet project requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Website Developer working in a collaborative team environment?

As a Website Developer in a team setting, your daily tasks often include coding new website features, troubleshooting bugs, and participating in team meetings to align on project goals. You’ll regularly collaborate with designers to implement visual elements, and work closely with back-end developers to ensure seamless integration of functionality. Effective communication and version control practices, such as using Git, are essential for coordinating with other team members and maintaining a smooth development workflow.

What is the difference between Website Developer vs Web Designer?

AspectWebsite DeveloperWeb Designer

Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, tech companies, agenciesDesign studios, marketing agencies, freelance
Common TasksWriting code, debugging, implementing featuresCreating layouts, selecting color schemes, designing user experience

While both roles collaborate closely, a Website Developer primarily focuses on coding and building functional websites, whereas a Web Designer concentrates on visual aesthetics and user experience. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities.

Is a website developer still in demand?

Yes, website developers are in high demand due to the ongoing need for businesses to establish and maintain an online presence. Skills in front-end and back-end development, along with knowledge of programming languages and web frameworks, are especially valuable in the current job market.

Is 3 months enough for web development?

For a website developer, three months can provide a foundational understanding of core skills such as HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript, but mastering full web development typically requires longer training and practical experience. The timeframe depends on prior knowledge, learning pace, and the complexity of projects involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Website Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Website Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related web development frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, and web development tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help developers collaborate and deliver user-focused solutions. These skills ensure that websites are functional, visually appealing, and meet client or business requirements efficiently.

Job description

Web and Graphics Web Developer

90% remote position, 10% in-person (Charlottesville, VA)

Position Summary: The Web and Graphics Developer designs, maintains, and continuously improves the organization's digital ecosystem. This role owns the end-to-end creation of web pages, UI/UX elements, and multimedia assets across our main websites and LMS platforms. You will partner closely with key stakeholders to deliver seamless, accessible, and user-friendly digital environments.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop responsive web pages, custom templates, and digital assets using modern frontend frameworks and design tools, ensuring strict adherence to WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards.
  • Produce high-fidelity graphics, UI layouts, and interactive multimedia assets that support instructional design, training programs, and organization communication campaigns.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, subject matter experts (SMEs), and the site manager to translate complex requirements into intuitive user journeys and rapid wireframes/prototypes.
  • Debug, optimize, and maintain web properties to ensure cross-browser compatibility, rapid page-load speeds, and flawless user experiences.
  • Lead front-end customization within CMS (DNN) and LMS (Moodle) environments, integrating dynamic content and APIs where necessary.
  • Act as the brand guardian across all digital touchpoints, ensuring consistent visual identity, typography, and image standards across websites, LMS, and portals.
  • Monitor and analyze web traffic and user behavior using tools like Google Analytics, translating data into actionable design and performance optimizations.
  • Manage the end-to-end publishing pipeline for multiple podcast shows, including uploading audio files, configuring metadata, generating custom episode artwork, and integrating player widgets/links across the DNN CMS and LMS platforms.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience managing content, configuring modules, and implementing UI layouts within enterprise CMS environments (DNN/DotNetNuke experience highly preferred).
  • 3+ years of professional experience bridging digital design and front-end development, with a strong track record of collaborating with backend engineering teams.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating modern UI/UX design capabilities, user journey mapping, and a "mobile-first" responsive design philosophy.
  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to build engaging, responsive content blocks and interactive elements that integrate seamlessly into existing CMS themes.
  • High proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator) and modern UI/UX prototyping tools (such as Figma or Adobe XD).
  • Bachelor's degree in web design, graphic design, communications, or a related field (equivalent professional experience will be considered).

Key Attributes

  • Cross-Functional Translator: Ability to work autonomously while seamlessly bridging the gap between technical teams (like your backend developer) and non-technical stakeholders to turn ideas into digital realities.
  • Articulate Communicator: Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to clearly explain design decisions, technical constraints, and UI/UX best practices to stakeholders of all technical levels.
  • Disciplined Project Owner: Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the proven ability to prioritize a diverse queue of design and development requests in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive Problem Solver: A self-starter who doesn't just identify website or layout issues, but actively designs and proposes creative, user-friendly solutions.
  • Highly Efficient Remote Professional: Proven ability to maintain peak productivity and meet project deadlines in a fully virtual environment, leveraging asynchronous communication and collaborative tools (like MS Teams) to stay seamlessly aligned with the team.
