What is a web infrastructure engineer?

Web Infrastructure Engineers are IT professionals responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the foundational technologies that support websites and web applications. They work with servers, networks, cloud services, and deployment pipelines to ensure sites are secure, scalable, and available. Their role often overlaps with DevOps and cloud engineering, focusing on optimizing performance, automating processes, and troubleshooting issues across the web stack.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a web infrastructure engineer?

To thrive as a Web Infrastructure Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, networking, and systems administration, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code systems (Terraform, Ansible) is essential.
