Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced developers and may assist with coding, testing, debugging, and designing web pages. This role provides valuable hands-on exposure to industry tools, programming languages, and best practices while helping interns develop their technical and teamwork skills. Successful completion of a web developer internship can enhance a candidate's resume and increase their chances of securing a full-time web development role.

What is a web developer internship?

In a web developer internship, you work with professional developers, designers, and project managers to support the development of a website and learn the skills of the trade. As an intern, you may assist with coding under the direction of a professional computer programmer, test existing code, format graphics for web use, or communicate with clients about the project. Your responsibilities may also involve testing new technology for potential use in the web development project. Some interns perform additional clerical duties as needed.

What are the typical projects and tasks assigned to a web developer intern, and how do they contribute to the overall team?

Web developer interns often work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with website updates, debugging code, creating new web pages, and implementing design changes under the guidance of senior developers. These projects allow interns to gain hands-on experience with web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and sometimes frameworks like React or Angular. Interns usually collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and project managers, contributing to real-world projects that impact the organization's digital presence. This collaborative environment helps interns develop both technical skills and an understanding of professional workflows, setting a strong foundation for future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a foundational grasp of web development principles, often supported by coursework or self-taught projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and exposure to frameworks such as React or Angular are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and adapt in team environments. These skills are crucial for contributing to real-world projects, learning quickly, and building a successful foundation for a web development career.

Can I be a web developer internship with no experience?

Web developer internships often do not require prior professional experience and are designed for beginners. Candidates typically need basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and demonstrating a portfolio or personal projects can improve chances of acceptance.

How to get a web developer internship?

To secure a web developer internship, build a portfolio showcasing your projects, learn relevant skills such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks, and apply to internships through company websites, job boards, or university career centers. Having a basic understanding of version control tools like Git and a willingness to learn are also beneficial.

Job description

Senior Lead Software Engineer, Front End Web (JavaScript, Angular, React, Node) (Enterprise Platforms Technology)

Do you love building and pioneering in the technology space? Do you enjoy solving complex business problems in a fast-paced, collaborative, inclusive, and iterative delivery environment? At Capital One, you'll be part of a big group of makers, breakers, doers and disruptors, who solve real problems and meet real customer needs. We are seeking Front End Software Engineers who are passionate about using cutting-edge open source frameworks with emerging technologies. As a Capital One Sr. Lead Software Engineer, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to be on the forefront of driving a major transformation within Capital One.

Enterprise Platforms Technology (EPTech) comprises many of Capital Oneโ€™s most important enterprise platforms. We play an essential role in establishing practices for building technology solutions across the company, while also delivering capabilities that exemplify those practices.

In this role as a Senior Lead Software Engineer, you will make significant contributions to the Web Platform domain at Capital One, encompassing three mission-critical systems: the authenticated customer servicing platform, the marketing and acquisition platform, and Capital One's design system. Together, these systems represent multiple "front doors" of the company, directly shaping the digital experience for millions of customers and prospects.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  • Drive high-leverage technical initiatives end-to-end, from problem framing through implementation and adoption

  • Operate as a trusted technical advisor across engineering teams, building credibility through expertise and clear communication rather than organizational authority

  • Own architectural and technical decisions for cross-team initiatives, balancing near-term delivery against long-term platform health

  • Bring a data-driven approach to technical problems โ€” using evidence to make the case for investment, prioritization, or a change in direction

  • Establish and evangelize engineering standards and best practices, including AI-native development patterns and agentic tooling adoption

  • Mentor engineers across the organization and contribute to technical interviewing, onboarding, and community-building efforts

  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and design leadership to align technical direction with business priorities

  • Utilize programming languages like JavaScript (Angular, React, Node), HTML/CSS, TypeScript, open source frameworks, and cross-browser/cross-device development practices

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree

  • At least 6 years of professional software engineering experience (Internship experience does not apply)

  • At least 1 year experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masterโ€™s Degree

  • 9+ years of experience in at least one of the following: JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, Node, or TypeScript

  • Experience operating as a senior individual contributor without formal management responsibility, driving outcomes through influence and technical credibility

  • 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks

  • Deep expertise in web performance, accessibility, and design systems at scale

  • Experience with web testing tooling and frameworks (e.g., Jest, Cypress, Playwright)

  • Experience working on large-scale web platforms serving high-traffic, customer-facing experiences

  • 2+ years of experience in Agile practices

  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical training/enablement efforts

  • Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities beyond basic code completion

Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting.
