Job description

Mayo Clinic's Research Biorepository Unit is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop and maintain Java based applications and services supporting research laboratory workflows. This team supports the biorepository and research lab systems with grant activities, including national research biobanks for the NIH. Strong skills in Java / Java EE, Javascript, and SQL are required. The successful candidate should have experience with JBoss application server, RedHat Linux and Oracle databases. Experience with web services (SOAP/REST), Tomcat Application Server, Power Shell scripts,  Ant/Maven build frameworks, MS SQL server,  and ETL processes is desired. Provides IT support for vended and custom applications, including resolving highly complex issues, and assists with data security, redundancy, and support in collaboration with more senior technical staff. The successful candidate will have prior development experience working with diverse stakeholders and building consensus across IT teams. 

This role works closely with cross-functional teams to translate business, research, and technical requirements into robust, maintainable software solutions that meet federal regulatory guidelines. Software Engineer responsibilities include designing, validating and implementing services aligned to enterprise architecture, including APIs, data and instrument integration points, and secure interoperability layers for systems that primarily support research or specimen workflows. Ensure all appropriate documentation of processes and source code is created and maintained. Communicate effectively with peers, leaders, and customers throughout the organization. Participate in expert level troubleshooting and resolve problems through root cause analysis, data and system investigation. Work on deployment automation/configuration management with tools including but not limited to ADO and GitHub. Continue to build knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Participate with the team in providing 24/7 call support.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field; Or an Associate's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with an additional 2 years of experience as described below.

  • Have working knowledge and experience of Software Engineering with a minimum of internships and a minimum of 1 yr. of experience, or 2yrs of experience coding applications or services in a high-level language (C, C++, Golang, Java, C# etc.).
  • Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills.
  • Possesses strong technical aptitude for designing and implementing software solutions.
  • Experience with modern application development frameworks
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Experience with Agile software development techniques.
