In a typical workday, a Web Accessibility Tester reviews websites or web applications to uncover and document accessibility barriers, using both automated testing tools and manual assessment techniques, such as screen reader testing. Collaborating with developers and designers is common, as testers provide actionable feedback and recommend solutions to improve accessibility. The role often involves staying up-to-date with the latest accessibility standards and participating in team meetings to discuss priorities and remediation progress. You may also be involved in training sessions or presentations to raise accessibility awareness within the organization. This collaborative and dynamic environment makes the work both impactful and continually evolving.

What is web accessibility testing?

A Web Accessibility Testing job involves evaluating websites, applications, and digital content to ensure they comply with accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Professionals in this role test for barriers that might prevent people with disabilities from accessing digital content, using tools like screen readers, keyboard navigation, and automated accessibility checkers. The goal is to create inclusive digital experiences for all users, including those with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments.

Strong understanding of web development and assistive technologies enhances effectiveness in this role.

What skills do you need to be a web accessibility testing specialist?

A web accessibility testing specialist needs strong knowledge of accessibility standards such as WCAG and Section 508, proficiency with testing tools like screen readers and browser extensions, and an understanding of web development languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to document and communicate issues clearly are also essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in web accessibility testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Web Accessibility Testing, you need a solid understanding of web standards, accessibility guidelines (such as WCAG), and experience with front-end development technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Familiarity with automated accessibility testing tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE), screen readers, and relevant certifications like CPACC or WAS are highly beneficial. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure that digital products are accessible to all users and comply with legal requirements, significantly improving user experience and inclusivity.
